If you’ve got plans for the year 2014, you’d better cancel them as you’ll be very busy toying with the brand new Flash Phone, designed by Peter Zsolt Koren. Apart from the fact that Adobe will dislike the name, the handset promises to be a revolution of the mobile phone industry, featuring wireless charging, a touchscreen, electronic ink display and flick-based navigation.
Of course that this slim device will feature a camera, but God only knows how many megapixels its resolution is going to be. Buttons seem to be completely gone, as we enter the of interactive projectors, allowing phones to project interfaces on any surface. They’ll even detect the users’ gestures and react according to them, or take a photo and overlay an interface… and that’s a year before Nokia Morph gets launched.

In case you haven’t gone completely mobile, there’s a chance you dig home landline telephones, cordless ones of course. What would those devices be without a proper old-school design? Chauhan Studio, from London introduces “Colombo One” and “Colombo Two”, the first one being a travel in time back to the 50’s and 60’s and a tribute to the “antique” Ericofon.
Colombo Two is more sexy, angled and comfortable, but you’ll be glad to know that these designs will be turned into real devices, that will surface on the market later this year. Also, their prices will be quite decent, so we might as well start a trend and revive cordless phones.

While most cellphone manufacturers are still trying to find a way to include projectors in bulky handsets, we’ve got a slim wonder on our hands, the Caps concept phone, designed by Jean-Jacques Chanut. It features a mini-projector that allows you to watch pictures (and maybe movies as well) on the wall, in case you’re in dire need for a slideshow.
The Caps Phone is fairly simple and you’ll be able to input numbers and browse its menus with the aid of a side mechanism. Also, I think I saw a 3.5 mm headphone jack in there to complete the specs list. It’s got a pretty cool lava-lamp-style display too!

Do you have a hamster or a dog? How about a cellphone? What if you could have all of these with the aid of a single device, behaving like it were alive? Enter Pet Phone…
The phone you can see in the image above is more than an object and, as Santiago Preto, its designer states, it can be happy when your wife calls or sad when the doctor sends you bad news via SMS. Such a technology is based on active memory and haptic experiences giving communication new meaning and use.
Pet Phone was a NEC sponsored project at the Academy of Art University it seems and it’s a pretty good idea, considering how much we love our phones and pets. I wonder how we’ll be able to feed such an original companion after a busy day of petting and tail wiggling.

If you liked the heart-shaped Okids concept phone, you’ll also enjoy the Kid mobile phone, designed by Eric Zhang from Illinois. It targets a public made out of kids that are less than 10 years old and its features are basic enough to make it child-friendly.
There’s an emergency button on the left of the Kid Phone and the parent’s numbers are set with the aid of an USB connection. The young user only has to press a button to call his folks from this Pokemon generation gadget. It kind of reminds me of the virtual pet devices era…you know Tamagotchi and stuff.
You know what this phone needs? Some gaming features, the usual Tetris or Bubble Bobble, perhaps even Arkanoid.

It’s not Samsung BlackJack we’re talking about, nor is it the successor of the famous handset, but rather a pretty good-looking concept, designed by Yuri Kim, from South Korea. The phone resembles LG Prada quite a bit, but it comes with a couple of neat features like a camera mode, MP3 mode, DMB-TV and GPS mode.
What’s really interesting is that you’ll control the phone with motions that resemble those used to handle a deck of cards. A slide to the side makes the handset enter GPS mode, while a slide in upwards makes it enter the MP3 mode. It’s an original way to control the phone and the interface is also worth mentioning for its qualities.

Pen-Cell is a concept phone that rather relies on utility than beauty, targeting the aging public. It’s a research project for the MIT AgeLab and you should know that the device was designed by Aaron Tang, from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pen-Cell is perfect for the hearing-impaired, as it shows visual hints of your communicational processes.
It uses basic text and voice technology, also acting like a memory aid. One of the concept’s primary features is the fact that you can use it in crowded places and be able to communicate, even if there’s noise around you, plus you won’t interrupt people.
The studies involved in the making of this concept have lead to the creation of an ergonomically comfortable handset that allows you to remember most of your contacts and what you talked to them on this phone. Did I mention that the device is also a pen?

The concept phone you see in the image below hasn’t received a name, yet, but it’s still a good-looker, thanks to its large, transparent display. Basically, that’s all that’s fascinating about this handset, its screen. It behaves exactly like the surface of a lake, standing still when the phone is in standby mode and showing reflections and flows as you watch movies, listen to music or browse.
This “Lake Phone” was designed by Xiao Zhihua, from Shanghai Huawin Telecom Technology co,. ltd and can be operated horizontally, vertically and diagonally if you want to, thanks to a shifting interface. All in all this is a stylish phone, but the style is generated by the software, rather than the hardware, if you ask me.

Edward Brown introduces the devices he designs as “phones for the immediate and not too distant future”. One of them is the Windows Mobile handset below, in fact an ultra slim Ultra Mobile PC/phone. It’s got a scratch resistant polymer and stainless steel casing and uses a touch based interface.
The list of features of this concept phone also includes a high resolution OLED screen and high resolution video and stills cameras. I wonder what chipset is running the show behind the case… And what about the internal memory? We’ll let the mystery be, at least till there’s a trace of branding on the UMPC/phone’s front side.

This mystery concept phone I’ve spotted on Flickr was created by kichu overclocked and it seems to be an AMD handset. Athfone’s keypad is no news to me, neither is its form factor, but the video features seem to be pretty good. At least that’s what I can say by having a glance at the handset’s display.
AMD Athfone was created, according to its designer with the aid of Adobe Photoshop CS2, by using vectoring. That “Game on” motto might as well be the device’s purpose, but with such an input mechanism, who would play games on this handset?
