Searching for concept phones on Flickr I stumbled upon these superb devices, which can be seen at the KDDI Design Center exhibition. Most of the concepts were designed by Marianne Bailey, but enough talking and let’s feast our eyes with these musical instruments/phones.

Don’t quite get the musicality of the device above, but the one below seems to turn into some sort of portable piano with pretty large keys. Sweet!

The phone below can be used as a blowing instrument and it seems to be accompanied by a couple of accessories that turn it into a real musical instrument.

Last but not least comes this cube-shaped handset, yet another puzzling device with musical functions I can’t figure out. Right now, I’m looking forward to seeing a band using such neat “instruments”.

Update: Here’s what Marianne Bailey said about the concepts:

“Please note “Sticks in the air” (drums) “Box to Play” (sampler) “Band in your pocket” (musical instrument attachments) and “Key to touch” (Piano were designed by Marianne Bailey. “Trio in your hand” (Sampler) and “Strings for your fingers” were designed by Yves Plattard. Both in-house designers for Yamaha Product Design Laboratory.

Btw. Band in your pocket (mobile with different musical attachment hardware effectors) you sing into the top and it changes your voice into the instrument of your choice. So expression in your singing voice already good expression with the hardware effector to add that extra touch of realism. The working prototype changes your voice to a trumpet! :)

The “stick mobile” joins together to make one mobile phone and can be split to play “air drums” while you wait for that bus ;) Also useful for checking a number, diary while chatting.”

Projector-Based Concept Phone is Holographic. Now Wait a Minute…

At first I thought that this was yet another Nokia Morph wannabe handset, but as soon as I realized that the actual phone is a hologram I was like “what the?”. Check out the picture below to figure out the mystery for yourself.

Projector-Based Concept Phone is Holographic. Now Wait a Minute...

As you can see, we need to attach a couple of small projectors to our fingers in order to “create” the screen of the device. This concept phone also comes with a camera, but don’t ask me where that is, because I haven’t figured it out yet. It must be on one of the user’s fingers, as is the receiver, but what about that touchscreen?

Do the small accessories sense when you touch the screen? The problem with this device is that you’ll have limited finger mobility, but the idea is great and surely original. Congrats Ronnie Ishii for such a brave and crazy (in a good way) design!

Meet FuChat, the cordless phone designed by D-Link, that can make normal calls and Internet ones if needed. It’s an eco-friendly device, made out of biodegradable plastic plus corn starch, sugarcane and some light aluminium. The phone can “sense” the user’s emotions and act accordingly, as you’ll find out if you keep on reading.

FuChat Phone, Eco-Friendly and Emotion-Based

If the handset senses a change of tone or body temperature, it will react to the user’s emotions displaying texts, changing its display, playing sounds and even changing color. Sounds like a good way to work out some anger management or “read the mind” of business partners using the device in front of you.

Plus, if you’re really really busy and want to inform everyone about it, you can use the FuChat phone as a “Do not disturb” sign and hang it on the door-handle. The back of the device displays, aside from the emotional info, weather images, the time and the above-mentioned sign. FuChat also comes with a wall-mounted base station that can also show you the weather, temperature, time and caller ID.

The Lifestyle concept phone you can see below was created by Elie Man, an industrial designer from South Florida for Breitling, the famous watch manufacturer. We’re dealing with a handset that’s also a timepiece, but we’ve got no specs list till now.

Instead, we find out that this concept comes with a titanium case, it’s based on the Motorola Mobile OS and features glare-proof sapphire crystals. Will this be James Bond’s next hot gadget or just a luxury item for wealthy people?

WAVE Interaction Cellphone Concept Makes a Clamshell Sexier

Who thinks external screens are way too small to be useful? I guess that this is quite a common opinion, so a concept that uses the exterior of a clamshell phone as a display is surely welcome. The WAVE Interaction cellphone is such a device, as you can see for yourself in the following pics.

The full-cover display will show you all the info you need to know, like the time of day, the battery and memory status, weather info and God knows what else. Also, this external display can be customized to your liking, so you’ll take wallpapers to the next level by using the entire surface of the clamshell.

Plus, there will be a ton of touchscreen-based games to play, without even needing to open up the handset. How’s that for an innovation?

Cyclop Robot Operated From a Mobile Phone and Taking Pics

Here’s a pretty interesting concept of a robot designed by Oleg M. and called Cyclop that can be operated from a mobile phone and used to take pics, record video, or just walk around the house. The robot’s feet are a sure indicator that it won’t be a speedy mini-Terminator but rather a very early version of the Transformer toys.

MobiFrance celebrated the French Independence Day on July 14th by showing the world a neat concept phone shaped like the Eiffel Tower. The concept bears the name of FL (French Luxury) and it’s a touchscreen handset with a 7.2 megapixel camera.

If you hold the phone vertically it looks just like the famous French monument, the Eiffel Tower and you’ll also notice that it features speakers on its sides. The FL supports multimedia playback, features a vibration mode and that neat touchscreen is an OLED display. No news about the price of this beauty, but it’s pretty interesting to see the Sony Ericsson branding on it.

Windows Mobile Touchscreen Phone Looks Hot, Keeps It Simple

David Turpin’s design of a touchscreen cellphone featuring Windows Mobile is brilliantly simple and sexy looking. Well, we can only assume that the handset’s display is touch sensitive, but judging by the device’s slimness, there’s no sliding keyboard hiding in there.

The only question now is what Windows Mobile flavour is this phone going to sport… Maybe Windows Mobile 7 and its superb touch-based interface? Also, I’m betting on the inclusion of an accelerometer for some auto-rotating menu fun.

Among a variety of concept phones with touchscreens there are also a few devices with wrap around screens, that usually make a lasting impression on us. Eric Strebel’s latest work can be seen below, a smartphone with a huge touchscreen and a pretty hot interface.

Wrap Around Screen Makes a Concept Hip

We’re dealing with a handset that comes with an e-ink screen that can also display information on the side of the device. More than that, the phone also includes a sliding keyboard, aside from the touchscreen plus indents that make the handset easy to pick up.

“Hole” Concept Phone Designed for Orange is a Winner

Friday, July 4th, 2008

This interesting design won the annual D&AD Student Awards and the concept handset belongs to Chi Shing Lo, one of the talented students at the De Montfort University. The “Hole” phone features (predictably enough) a hole, that can be used for charging purposes (inductive), as a data transfer port and last but not least as a camera view finder.

Hole Concept Phone Designed for Orange is a Winner

The above-mentioned hole is surrounded by a mirrored surface, so it’ll allow the user to take his/her own picture, for the usual narcissistic fun. Hmmm, how about using that hole as magnifying glass with the aid of a lens or as a wrench if your imagination is wild enough.

Oh and by the way, the handset was designed for Orange so that’s a semi-promise that it’ll become real one day.
