Purikura is a Japanese trend among local girls who like to enter photo booths in arcades, take pictures of themselves and edit them. After that, the final result gets printed and eventually sticked onto the cover of a book belonging to a schoolgirl. Sharp brings this trend and tech to mobile phones, allowing the girls to edit their pics on the go.

Purikura is now available on Sharp’s concept phone and since everyone’s got one in Japan, or even more handsets, this will prove to be quite a hot initiative. The girls will also be able to use a “shared art space”, where they can be creative about their own pictures.

The height of all technology can be seen these days at CEATEC 2008, where the star of the day was a concept phone created by a partnership between Fujitsu and DocoMo. This handset can be split in two parts, the screen and keyboard, with the display handling the software and interface, while the keyboard can be used for networking and radio functions.

This handset’s keypad is in fact a touchpad, which you can use horizontally or vertically and even stick it to a side of the phone’s screen, with the aid of a magnet. You can also choose to stick it below the screen or anywhere you like, as long as the magnet bonds the two parts of the phone together.
It’s important to mention that the two main components communicate via Bluetooth and that they can be used separately for multimedia playback. Let’s see these on the market now! More CEATEC 2008 updates soon!

The first Android smartphone, T-Mobile G1 was last week’s star for sure, but how about the concept phones that should have been the Google Phones? Here’s a brand new one for you, designed by Eduardo Altamirano Segovia. The concept device is based on the interaction of the screen’s centerline with the user’s thumb.

This G-Phone features an OLED screen and a curved front surface, plus an accelerometer that detects the handset’s position and changes the functions of the “call-hang” or “yes-no” buttons. It’s a great design that will maybe make it to Google and HTC’s drawing board, as they start working on the next Android device.

Nothing much to say about this concept DECT handset, named Ayotte and designed by Alex Thusbass, except for the fact that it comes with an interesting keypad that seems to feel very touch-friendly when it meets the user’s fingers.
The display is well integrated in the device and the handset, as a whole resembles the famous Nokia 8800 a bit. More shots of the Ayotte DECT phone below.

The first Android smartphone has plenty of features, as does the HTC Touch HD, but can they make coffee? Well, at least this funny design by Francesco Lerro can, the Mokia 8015. Its Bluetooth headset can be used as a spoon for stirring your daily fuel. How cool is that? I mean, both phone and coffee maker…

I wonder if such a concept phone will ever make it on the market? Swiss Army concept phones should be no biggie to create, so making a fruit and bread slicer from a (let’s say i)Phone is surely an option.

The designers from Art Lebedev worked with Russian carrier Scartel and created a wonderful concept phone, yet unnamed, but still looking hot. Since Scartel has just launched its WiMax network in Moscow and St. Petersburg, it will be a great occasion to allow the public to see that a WiMax-enabled phone looks like.

And what a handset this is! It’s also got WiFi, tri-band GSM, microSD, a very impressive 850 x 480 display, dual cameras, 3.5mm audio jack and an A/V connector. The usual basic keys are placed beneath the screen (call/end) plus a joystick that will make navigation easier.
This concept phone would have been much sexier with a keyboard, but given the nature of its touchscreen, we’ll settle with a virtual one.

If you’re one of those phone owners who only want a cellphone that does what most such devices are supposed to (that is call people), you’ll surely love the following concept design.
Rune Larsen is the designer of this phone that features a pop-up transparent LCD. The keypad looks quite nice and you’re bound to lose this handset in your pocket, if you don’t wear tight jeans.

My first thought after seeing this handset was that I was checking out yet another iPhone clone, but one with thicker edges and a smaller screen. Nice to see the virtual keyboard separated from the actual screen, but we’re in the era of full QWERTY devices, so this might not appeal to the public too much.
If you ask me, this would be a perfect iPod, a video iPod to be more precise… This black and white device was designed by Philippe Barsol.

I’m not saying the Museke Phone resembles the iPhone, as that cliche has become an insult for designers these days, but I can say that the device pictured below is a neat looking touchscreen phone focused on multimedia playback.
Jayalsop is the creator of the Museke and keeps it really simple, with the aid of a clear and intuitive interface.

I’m just speculating right now, but the device might be designed for kids or elderly people, since it displays such large symbols and fonts, but it also might be a more unconventional approach to the interface. In case I got it right, with the target market of the handset, the Museke might be the first or one of the few touchscreen phones for elderly folks.

In the era of iPhones and whatnotPhones we should be hunting for simplicity instead of flexible displays and huge internal memories. The Tatung VoIP handset relies on that… it won the 2008 IF, IDEA and Red Dot awards after all and it’s a creation of the folks of Nova Design.

You can customize the case of the device to your liking, but don’t think that the Tatung is uncool if it has an antenna. It’s fake and just a nostalgic touch, for the ones who caught a glimpse of the early cellphone era. Probably the best looking VoIP phone I’ve seen till now…
