We see tons of stylish concept phones each day, but the Op Art is a bit more than the average human can grasp. I’m not much of a poet or dreamer, so I don’t like this design, but Alessandra M. Enriconi put her best effort into creating a handset that’s unconventional and futuristic.

Don’t expect to find uber-features on the specs list of the Op Art phone, as it only comes with a basic touchscreen plus a microphone and speaker, each on a sliding side. There’s also a camera in the mix, but you can only guess where it’s hidden, as for the display of the handset it can change its appearance by showing op art images.

Pop Quiz! What is Op Art? As Wikipedia puts it, it’s “known as optical art, a genre of visual art, especially painting, that makes use of optical illusions. Op art is also known as geometric abstraction and hard-edge abstraction, although the preferred term for it is perceptual abstraction.”

The Skype Flink Phone boasts an ergonomic design, causing less pain and irritation to the user’s ear, after a long talk. Created by Yopi Djauhari, the concept device is designed for the Skype user and can be bent and hung all over the place, even on your PC display.

Although it features no display, the phone is still appealing, while keeping the key placement simple and basic. The grey and blue colour combination reminds us of the Skype brand and the only thing I’m curious about is that handset’s battery.
If it lasts longer than those of the average VoIP handsets, then you can count me in as a fan of the Flink Phone.

Imagine seeing such a handset at night, in some person’s hand, while walking down the street… Not only will that transparent illuminated keypad catch you eye, but the nifty touchscreen will surely have you wondering what brand is responsible for such a sexy device.
We’re dealing with the slimmest of smartphones and quite a fashionable one, to be honest, designed by Roberto Quiles Jr.

Last, but not least, let me point out a mechanism that I’ve seen on many concepts, but manufacturers still avoid using it: a keypad that’s included in the phone’s main body and gets released at the push of a button. This system if very much like a box of matches… Plus, it rids you of faulty sliding parts. How about it?

Wooden phones are usually expensive, if you think about those Mpingo handsets from Gresso, made out of African Blackwood, but here’s an interesting twist to this story. How about a Maple Phone? This one’s designed by Hyun Jin Yoon and Eun Hak Lee and it’s a basic camera phone concept, covered in wood.

Its touch sensitive keys light up when you touch the device and you’ll see them glittering through the housing. The Maple Phone measures 4.5 x 10.4 x 9.8 cm and it comes with an MP3 player, digital camera and basic functions like calling or texting. What’s interesting is that the display is placed at the back, revealing itself as you slide the handset.
Hopefully, we’ll see the Maple Phone going into production and hitting the streets at a more decent price than its luxurious counterparts. You can find more info on this product here.

Since the surfacing of Nokia 888 as a concept we’ve seen quite a bunch of wearable handsets and the one below is no exception, looking like the previously mentioned device. It’s designed by HyunSung Lee and can be worn like a bracelet, but this is a longer one than you would expect. I’m guessing it features a flexible OLED screen, but check out that original camera placement, right on your wrist.
Sci-fi? Yeah, that’s what the designer said too…

The Basic Tab mobile phone design manages to achieve a new interpretation of the whole “iPhone thing”, copied over and over again by big handset manufacturers. Its designer, Jaren Goh focused more on looks, than on futuristic specs and he did a splendid job, so we might as well call this a fashion device.

Just look at the wide black screen at the front of the Basic Tab phone, a tad more elegant than Apple’s approach. Notice that the display is placed on top of a metal part and it gets a bit of RAZR aggressiveness going on. In case you’re not convinced that this is really a fashion phone, you should check out the camera’s metallic tab at the back. Precious, just precious…

Face it, we’re living in an eco-trendy era! No longer we see stars getting criticized by environmental organisations, as they donate everything they have to them, drive hybrid cars, use ecological phones and gadgets and become vegetarians. Well, here’s a phone for those people, the Vertu Essence, an eco-friendly device of 2015.

Vertu Essence was created by Wen-Sheng Hong and it comes with a toughened ceramic and titanium case plus a sapphire crystal screen that will probably last forever. Notice that cool farmed bamboo exterior granting the phone the eco-look plus the option of switching parts of the handset in the following years, as the technology evolves.

We’re back to 2015, with a Vertu handset designed for ladies this time, the Suave phone. This concept was created by Christopher Tak Cheung Yue and it’s the new definition of luxury and sophistication. It comes with organic shapes and turns into a comfortable interaction environment.

In order to make it a real Vertu, it includes precious metals like yellow gold or pink gold (front side) plus a titanium rim and sheep skin leather (back side).

Seems that most designers have 2 years in mind when creating the phones of the future: 2012 and 2015. After seeing 3 Nokia cellphones of 2012, it’s time to check out the Vertu line of 2015, which includes the Edge handset. This concept design was created by Samant Khanna and it’s a small 70 mm device with a touchscreen.

The Vertu Edge comes with a small frontal screen used for the basic functions and a foldable edge-to-edge touchscreen at the back of the handset. This can be folded upwards, converting Edge into a bar phone. The other specs are impressive too: built-in GPS, 16GB of internal memory, high-speed mobile broadband support and Office Mobile.
All of that is packed within a stylish handset, that I hope we’ll see on the market sooner than 2015.

Product design can be taken further now, as different gadgets start to imitate famous cars, planes or even draw their inspiration from videogames. This time we’re dealing with a famous car brand turned into a handset. It’s not official by any means (as far as we know), but the Aston Martin phone looks well enough to draw our attention. It was designed by Abhilash Chandrasekharan.

You’ve got to admire the implementation of the “headlights” and front of the car in the phone’s lower part. The only problem with this concept phone is its thickness, but I guess that a couple of diamonds and gold coating will make you forget about this handicap.
