Talk about environmentally friendly gadgets, the
Leaf Phone concept you can see below is one eco-friendly device, created by designer Anastasia Zharkova. The handset resembles a natural leaf and uses an organic structure, plus eco-friendly plastic as its main material.

This phone is also a mini PC, since it serves multiple purposes and it’s even able to project a laser keyboard onto any surface, allowing you to access the Internet anytime. Leaf Phone doesn’t necessarily require normal batteries, since it can also run on solar energy, proving to be a sustainable communicator.
Also, we learn that the handset is able to adapt to the dynamics of the human muscles, so you can attach it to any part of the body, like a very cool personal accessory.

NTT DoCoMo has just revealed new concept phones made out of wood and bearing the pretty funny name of “Touch Wood”. The prototype is made out of surplus wood from the trees that are trimmed down to maintain forests healthy, so nature won’t be harmed in the making of the handset.

This eco-friendly Touch Wood phone was developed together with Olympus Corporation, Sharp and “More Trees” also played a part in the initiative, the latter being a reforestation project. The handset pictured above is made from cypress wood and its color is just as Mother Nature made it, without artificial paints or other chemicals.
Even the scent of wood was kept, to give a special appeal to the concept phone, that can be considered an organic piece of machinery. Expect Touch Wood to be unveiled during the Telecom World 2009 event, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 5 to 9. The head of this project was musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and the interface of the device is inspired by the works of photographer Mikiya Takimoto.

For modern people upgrading a phone means buying a smartphone, but thanks to handsets like modu, the modular phone, things will change in the future. Now we’ve come across a very interesting
concept phone, the Label With Green device, designed by Shao Wei Huang, Chung Kai Chiang, Yu Pei Kuo and Chia-Yi Cho.

In order to power this handset, you’ll use ECO-Green Electronic Labels, that are solar panel paper labels that power various parts of the phone (camera, keyboard, speaker, display and solar battery). All you need to do in order to activate a function of the device is stick solar labels into the back side of the device.
The main idea behind the concept is to make the user conscious about the toxic waste that gets accumulated through the disposal of electronic gadgets and the energy consumption behind this process. An innovative idea, that’s also environmentally-friendly and original.

The work of two designers, Seungkyun Woo and Junyi Heo, the Leaf concept is a
wearable bracelet phone that uses solar cells to recharge. The cells are placed on the handset’s front panel, in order to juice it up.

Also, the concept phone’s cradle hosts the cells on its back and in case the day is cloudy, you can always use electricity to recharge the device. The Leaf phone is basic and provides the user with call features, messages and… an eco-friendly attitude.
As you can see in the pictures below, the handset incorporates a LED dot display, a speaker, a magnetic terminal, a flexable band, perfect for its bracelet mode and a navi ball controller.

Viber Burst is a great idea, a concept charger created by Josh Pell, a designer at Swinburne University, who imagined a brand new way of recharging handsets. The charger relies on kinetic energy, that it gets from simple movements and harnesses it for later use.

The concept charger stores the energy it gets in your bag, on your hand or in your shoes and it can transfer all of it to your phone in just two seconds, completely recharging it. Viber Burst is made out of heat and weather resistant materials (PC/ABS), that can also take mechanical and electrical shocks.
You’ll find the charger’s main components on a flexible PCB and you’ll be able to install the device in any place that’s subject to intense motion, in order to get kinetic energy. This gadget takes eco-friendliness to a new level and it’s a wonder it’s not commercially available yet.

Nokia’s more
eco friendly than ever and this trend is also followed by designers who like to create concept phones bearing the Finnish company’s brand. This is also the case of Luis Barceló, the creator of Nokia Ink 01, a very neat phone pictured below.

Nokia Ink 01 is made from recycled aluminium, it packs an ultra low power E-ink display and it’s very easy to disassemble. The percentage of recyclable materials in it is pretty high, as it aims to protect the environment and we all know that aluminium can be recycled almost endlessly. Instead of the standard mechanical keys, Nokia Ink 01 comes with a capacitive sensor, so there are less separate parts to use.
There’s also a mini OLED display on board, allowing the users to view the photographs they take with the aid of the incorporated camera. The handset uses a silver-zinc battery, instead of the Li-Ion standard unit, and this type of battery is 95% recyclable and it generates 40% more energy density.

It’s one thing to use an alcohol cell to power up a concept phone, but when the handet looks like a whisky container, thins get interesting. Designed by
Tryi Yeh, the Cheers phone is based on alcohol cell, an energy saving alternative to Li-ion batteries.

There’s a cap on top of the handset, locking the “fuel” inside and also working as a function switch. I have to say that the handset’s interface looks great and the concept phone seems to pack a full touchscreen display, that looks transparent.
Imagine all the effects that such a display can create and of course that there’s touch zoom on the feature list, for those who like taking a picture with their “alcohol phone”. Great design for drinkers and non-drinkers!

Tryi Yeh created a visually stunning concept phone, the Magnet Liteon handset, that incorporates
solar panel cells, fuelling the device and turning it into an eco-friendly gadget. What’s neat is that the Magnet Liteon comes with a big OLED display and a magnet at the back, allowing the user to change the structure of the panel.

Notice (in the images below) how the phone passes from Media mode to Game Mode and the large touchscreen display looks great, specially when used in landscape mode in a gaming session.
If I’m not mistaking, the screen part can be separated while playing games or watching movies and it can communicate wirelessly with the keypad part. A great concept phone, created by Tryi Yeh and finally a green gadget that looks decent.

Designer Sean Park created a handset that pays a tribute to the LOHAS trend (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability), the Aqua Liquid concept phone. This device relies on liquid fuel cells and it’s one of the
eco-friendly gadgets we sometimes like to have a look at.

The phone’s parts can be recycled, when the handset’s “dead” and you should know that Aqua Liquid’s display is based on E-Ink technology, that doesn’t use much liquid fuel, saving you battery life and precious talk time.
I must say that the concept looks quite nice, unlike some other eco-friendly designs I’ve seen and it’ll make one particular manufacturer very rich, if it reaches the production stage.

Hydro- from the Esato board created an interesting
Sony Ericsson concept, one of the many “green” handsets that will make our planet better and cleaner. It would be nice to finally be able to buy a touchscreen-based and eco-friendly handset, although I’m not quite sure what “100% green phone means”.

I’m guessing you can completely recycle each and every bit of the phone and as far as specs are concerned, we have no information. This could be an XPERIA, a brand new Cyber-shot or even a touchscreen Walkman.
My guess is that this is some sort of a strange PDA phone, that uses a stylus, but I might be wrong, so feel free to speculate.
