The
modu device has taught us that nothing beats customization, as has a previous concept, the
Tile phone, if I’m not mistaking. bUILD-a-pHONE is pretty tough to spell, but still a nice idea, allowing the user to constantly personalise and customize his handset. It seems to rely on environmentally-friendly technology and the do-it-yourself concept.
You can add or remove features to your handset now, just by purchasing parts… much like a LEGO or puzzle game.

iPhone who? Just look at the P-Per concept phone below, designed by the Chocolate Agency and you’ll why we can consider the iPhone to be outdated. It’s only 7mm thin and includes a 3 megapixel camera plus it can recharge its batteries in 2 minutes. How? It may be solar energy or just another “alien” technology.

The design of this device is based on layers, 4 of them to be more precise: extruded polycarbonate, titanium (recycled), a printed circuit board and a flexible LED touchscreen that wraps around the phone and comes with haptic feedback.
This original display redefines the interface concept and enhances multimedia abilities thus guaranteeing an unique user experience.

We’re in the
environmentally friendly phones universe again, checking out the SLIQ concept, made out of recycled aluminium, a brilliant way of saving Mother Earth, by replacing plastics. Also, it keeps the handset light, but let’s talk about the features of this phone designed by Mike Serafin.
SLIQ comes with an organic LED display, that uses 40% less power than standard LCD screens.

Also, the phone is user-powered so it’s brilliant when travelling abroad and lacking chargers. After it’s ready to be thrown out, the SLIQ can be disassembled and reused. The phone also comes with a pretty neat interface, Sleep mode and a GPS.

What you can see below is the Packet concept phone, the winner of the Istanbul Design Week 2007, created by Emir Rifat ISIK. It’s a surprising device measuring only 5 x 5 cm (folded), which opens up to show its user 5 surfaces which include a keypad, 2 mini keyboards and touch sensitive buttons.

The handset is made out of some sort of e-paper, that’s touch-sensitive and makes the device extremely light and thin. It may also be made of environmentally friendly materials, so we’ll be high tech and “green” at the same time, in case this design turns into a real phone.

It’s been a while since the last
eco friendly handset, hasn’t it? Formwelt design studio is ready to introduce us to its newest concept phones, designed for Siemens, the Solar and Leaf projects. They’re part of the Gigaset Eco Visions series and can be considered the greenest handsets we’ve seen lately.

Solar is the concept phone you can see above, a solar powered device that comes with a thin and sleek design. It’s made out of light materials (light metal, eco plastic and glass) and it features a touch-sensitive OLED display.
Leaf is available below, as you might have guessed, in green colour and it comes with the same features and form factor as the Solar handset. Also, the phone uses haptic technology and these 2 “green” goodies will probably make it to the winners’ list at the Red Dot Design Awards 2008. More details about these products over here.

Well, portable PCs are one thing, but wearable devices are another, as the concept of carrying your beloved portable computing system around is evolving. Meet the Flux PC, that features a wearable bracelet, which acts as a hub for this new system.
The concept also includes a portable display that interfaces with the bracelet with the aid of a wireless connection.

It seems that the bracelet also acts as a storage device, while the whole system can easily connect wirelessly to other computers. The Flux PC’s display is a touchscreen made out of environmentally friendly materials and the bracelet is customizable.

Want a fashion cameraphone that’s also
eco-friendly? Add a wavy design to that and we’ve got an inspirational device, designed by xin FAN and shown on Coroflot. It’s got a Lenovo branding on it and a slightly uncomfortable keypad, that’s also wavy.

All of these design waves are inspired by the Ocean, according to the creator of the handset, while the camera’s coloured lens is embedded in the white housing and looks like a crystal block. The concept phone seems to be using some sort of “raw material” keeping it really environmentally friendly by reducing pollution.
Back to the phone’s lens, it would be produced with the aid of IMD technology that involves the use of the GE special plastic and attached to the device together with the speaker decoration. They’ll be attached to the housing through a heating procedure. In case you’re good at such technical stuff, maybe you got the whole process. I know I didn’t…

We’ve seen a lot of wood-based phones lately, either using
wood panelling, made out of
bamboo, or old-fashioned wood. This time we’re dealing with a Wood smartphone, designed by Gernot Oberfell, from the UK. This concept took part in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008 and it uses WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) made out of 80% natural fibres.

The smartphone’s buttons and caps are made of biodegradable plastic, so it’s extremely easy to save the Planet and stay high-tech on the go. Also, it seems that as time goes by, the phone will look and feel nicer, since the wood will start biodegrading (in a good way). This phone’s so eco-friendly that beavers could buy dams out of it!

This concept is, in fact an entire “green” initiative that comes from LINC, a company that’s saving the planet with the aid of recycling and phone leasing. Instead of buying a phone, using it and throwing it away, you’ll be able to lease LINC’s devices, use them for a year and get brand new handsets by sending the old ones in for recycling.

What’s neat about this system is that you’ll be able to keep your personal information and data stored on the phone, by transferring them on the new device. Everything, from the contacts, to your favourite songs and memos will be there. The old phone you’ll send LINC will have its parts used for recycling in order to make new phones. Sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Hope it goes beyond the concept status.

Last time I saw a phone that had anything to do with bamboo, I was checking out the
Chute concept phone designed by Michael Laut. However,
Gert-Jan van Breugel‘s concept is far greener that any other device we’ve seen. It’s so green that it even becomes a plant once it’s disintegrated, as it includes bamboo seeds that can grow roots, once the handset’s case is buried.

The case of the Bamboo Phone is made out of bio-plastic and bamboo, keeping it really environmentally friendly. It relies on muscle power that provides it with electricity with the aid of a cranking charger. 3 minutes of cranking equals enough power for a call, plus the device’s display is monochrome and doesn’t eat much battery power.
A couple of statistics from the designer’s site show how we’re saving the planet by using this phone and they’re pretty convincing if you ask me. Too bad that the percentage of such phones is low, comparing to the rest, but at least Nokia’s going green too with the Remade phone.
