Going back to the past, we uncover a phone design that participated in the
LG Design the Future Competition, but didn’t make the top 3. Created by Eugene Kim, the LG Eagle is a dual touchscreen handset, with a sexy gap between its two segments, as shown in the images below.

This stylish phone uses dual multi-touch screens, that provide a nifty gaming experience, one that’s on par with the Nintendo DS. The gap between the two screen segments might make the device a bit thick, but that’s the price you pay for sexy looks. LG Eagle’s exterior features control buttons, so you can operate the device, without flipping it open.
I have a feeling that if this phone were real, it would sell like crazy in Japan…

Designer Benjamin Lotte created the LG Exo concept phone, a handset based on an interesting idea: a skeletal system that protects the parts inside the device. Yes, the LG Exo is a resilient piece of gadgetry with a high strength polymer exosketelon that protects its inner parts and supports the external rubber skin.

Exo comes with a curved body, enhanced ergonomics and great strength. It also incorporates a flexible OLED display, making the phone even more resilient to shocks and interactions. Overall, this LG handset is able to withstand any kind of damage, thanks to its external shell, always kept in pristine conditions.
Underneath the rock-hard case, you’ll find a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon CPU and the device’s specs list also includes a 5 megapixel wide angle camera, a high power Lithium Ion battery and a 3.8 inch OLED display. Viable or not?

Sometimes the best designs aren’t the complex and good-looking ones, but the simplistic ones. This is proved by the original
LG Tag concept phone, pictured below and created by Speed Studio Design. The device clips to the ear of the user for better portability and hands-free use.

LG Tag comes with a simple touchscreen, that allows you to navigate the menus via scrolling and tapping. The device handles data entry and can connect to a computer through wireless and reach any other mobile device, relying on a proprietary website. Social networking features are supported too and we learn that Tag’s rear side is a speaker surface.
Basically, this can be considered a cellphone hidden inside a Bluetooth earpiece, complete with a tiny touchscreen…

Samsung already announced a 3D display mobile phone and we’ve all seen 3D television sets getting released lately. But what about other companies? Petr Kubik designed a 3D LG mobile phone concept, that includes glasses, an intuitive stylus and expandable screens. 3D movies and even tridimensional videocalling is supported on the device.

The 3D phone measures 66x133x14mm, features an adjustable leg support and a photovoltaic screen at the rear for instant recharging. It also comes with an expandable touch display, measuring 177x104mm. WiFi and Bluetooth are also on board, as well as Skype support, a mini USB port, speakers, a mic and 3D scanners.
The interactive stylus is a pretty nifty piece of work, but we’d like a cellphone that shows 3D images, without requiring special glasses. Can this be achieved and what company will do that first?

We’ve been seeing quite a bunch of LG concept phones over the past week, most of them taking awards and honourable mentions at the LG Design the Future Competition. Here’s another interesting design, created by Drew Janiszyn and dubbed LG Fusion. The device incorporates a wraparound screen, as shown by one of the images below.

The handset uses a mobile scanner, that digitizes business cards and can also scan receipts and credit cards, for easier transactions. You can use the smartphone as a prepay unit, among others. As far as the wraparound screen is concerned, its top side shows the alerts, battery life and other types of useful information, like who’s calling.
LG Fusion comes with a camera with flash at the back, a front camera, a function button and an output area in the front upper side of the handset. Quite an interesting concept, we have to say!

As part of the LG Design the Future Competition, an honourable mention was also awarded to the LG Surface concept phone. This is in fact a watch phone for the blind, featuring a Braille keypad and an unique shape, allowing the user to sense the orientation of the device by feel.

LG Surface’s tapered shape helps the user distinguish its orientation and we learn that the two top pieces of the phone are connected. This concept includes a slide on/off watch band, allowing the unit to act as a free standing cellphone. The watch part is provided by two raised dots that move clockwise and tell hours and minutes.
The button on top will trigger the speak out loud function, the one on the left is used for send/receive features and right side button is used for delete/cancel.

Among the devices that got LG Design the Future Competition awards (honourable mention), we have to mention the LG Atlas concept phone. Designed with the disabled users in mind, this device docks into a base that projects pages, so the user can view multiple apps at the same time.

The phone’s dock uses a tracking system that senses your hand gestures, allowing the user to spin the pages in a loop, plus zoom in and out. A phone with a projector is not a new idea, but the way this innovation is implemented on the Atlas is really something new.

We continue to show you the results of the LG Design the Future Competition and today we’ve found the LG Flutter concept smartphone. This device received the first-ever Prop Mater’s Choice Award, given to Dua Xiong for the great design shown below.

The LG Flutter concept phone will have the unique opportunity of being featured in a future blockbuster film. This smartphone opens up like a fan, as shown in the image above and reveals a flexible OLED touchscreen display that scrolls radially.
Since this is a device that tends to look like a weapon, we’ll speculate that it’ll be featured in a superhero movie… or maybe a sci-fi production?

The LG Design the Future Competition has come to an end, so now we know the winners of the challenge meant to find the future of LG mobile phones. LG partnered with crowdSPRING in this initiative and received no less than 400 design submissions. The winner is the AL-i concept, created by Zack Filbert, Chris Carpenter, James Connors, and Kees Luyendijk.
Unfortunately we can’t show you the design, but we can show you the second placed handset, LG Premium.

Back to the winner, AL-i is the work of second year industrial design students from the same design class in Virginia Tech. LG AL-i is a smartphone concept based on one-handed use. The students will receive $20,000 for their effort, plus Autodesk Alias Sketch software.
As far as Premium is concerned, this is a mobile phone with 3D interface that connects the phone and car together. It’ll allow the user to adjust in-car climate, control infotainment features, select seat memory and check tire pressure. The concept is the work of Nouphone Bansasine, a professional car designer.

We’re back with another
LG concept phone, the King model pictured below and created by Solomon Reese, for the LG: Design the Future Competition. The handset features a double touchscreen and a bunch of other interesting specs, that you’ll learn after the break.

LG King comes with a camera at the front of the device, plus a camera at the back, fingerprint authentication, USB connectivity and a headphone jack on the left side of the device. The camera at the back is a 10 megapixel unit with Flash and video light, but what’s really interesting about this concept is the fact that its second sliding screen turns into a virtual keyboard, gaming or multimedia controls.
What do you think? Is this a viable design?

[Thanks Solomon Reese]
