We’ve seen our share of NTT DoCoMo prototypes, fascinating devices, if you ask me, but here’s a new one to check out. What we have here is a prototype phone, but the focus is on its accessories, a blood tester, a flute and an e-ink reader.
This technology should be implemented commercially around 2015, when modular devices will probably be as popular as Android handsets and modu will sell as many handsets as HTC. Why aren’t these accessories connected via Bluetooth? This is a question that only NTT DoCoMo can answer, but feel free to speculate…

We deal not only with concept phones, but also leaks, since we like the best and freshest of handsets that get leaked on the web! It’s also the case of BlackBerry Storm 2, that just got leaked in a series of pictures you can check out below. Codenamed Oden, the device is a GSM flavoured handset, packing WiFi and a GPS.
As you can see, BlackBerry Storm 2 features touch sensitive controls, instead of buttons below the screen and we got word that major improvements are to be found beneath the case (faster CPU, more memory).
Will this beauty hit the shops before the holiday season? RIM’s not quite able to protect its secrets, since we recently saw the leaked Onyx and Gemini BlackBerries as well…

Microsoft has just launched a new Twitter account (fake, see update below) supporting the launch of Office 2010 and they used the occasion to tweet about some Zune novelty coming in June 2009. The Redmond giant also advised folks to hold off from buying an iPhone or Palm Pre, as a new product is about to be launched.
Worst case scenario: Zune HD will make its appearance and attempt to compete against the iPod Touch. Best case scenario: project Pink is real and there’s a Zune Phone out there to stun us all.
However, there’s an even better case scenario, considering that the famous E3 gaming expo kicks off on June 2nd… could the new Zune product (phone or HD player) support Xbox gaming?
UPDATE: Turns out that the Twitter account was fake and it was all a hoax from a non-Microsoft guy. Well, we’re still hoping for the Zune Phone to turn up…

Omnia is already becoming a series of Samsung handsets, now that along with Omnia i900 and Omnia HD i8910, the manufacturer is planning to release an Omnia Pro model, featuring a full QWERTY keyboard.
Since it’s Sunday and there’s no concept in sight, we show you the mockup of the future device, done by the folks of samsung.hdblog.it
Samsung Omnia Pro will also feature a wide touchscreen and it’ll hit the market in July, for about $662. It’ll run Windows Mobile 6.1 and use a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash, image stabilizer and support for video recording. An upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 should also be available and the display of the Pro is a 3.5 inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen.

LG has just announced a brand new design competition, partnering with crowdSPRING and Autodesk, in order to get a fresh vision on the future of mobile phone products. This competition is for U.S residents age 18 and over only, who can design new and revolutionary LG phones, competing for $80,000 in awards.
First place will get a $20,000 award, while second gets $10,000, third $5,000 and there will also be 40 honorable mentions of $1,000 plus an LG U.S. phone. The competition starts on April 20, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m. PST and ends on June 7, 2009 @ 11:59 p.m. PST. Winners will be announced on July 7, 2009 at www.crowdspring.com/LG/winners and the official rules of the competition can be found at www.crowdspring.com/LG.
Autodesk will supply the designers involved in the competition with a 15 day trial of SketchBook Pro. This software is a digital sketchpad, a paint and drawing app compatible with MAC or PC, allowing its users to gain access to professional design tools, in order to create to turn their futuristic ideas into sketches.

Although CTIA Wireless is history now, there are still a bunch of concepts to be checked out, as they’ve been missed by the general public. One of those is the Kyocera EOS concept phone, a foldable device packing an OLED display.
The handset can fold up into some sort of wallet shape and there are 2 configurations it can use: a portrait QWERTY mode and a widescreen OLED display mode.
This astonishing phone even features shape memory keys that become flat when not in use and you should know that Kyocera EOS can be charged via a kinetic method, based on piezoelectric generators. Next up is the concept device in the last photo below (the one showing Slumdog Millionaire scenes), also a Kyocera design.
Known as “NXT”, this phone features a context-sensitive display and its controls change according to the handset’s functioning mode (movie, music, gaming). Kyocera promises that at least some of these technologies will make it to its upcoming portable devices, so we can only hope for the best.

Spider-phone sounds like something taken out a teenager’s gaming inventory, but it’s not, not even a concept phone, as some may hope. It’s real folks and this Spiderman-themed handset is already available in Hong Kong for HK$1180, which translates to about US$152.
I wonder if that’s Peter Parker/Tobery Maguire on the phone’s box and moving on to the specs, they’re pretty basic and average: a 2 megapixel camera, a microSD slot and a swivel display.
We’ve seen a Batman phone previously, even an Obama phone, but how about a Wonder Woman phone? What would set it apart from other such devices?

We’ve asked ourselves numerous times what the secret behind designing concept phones is, but I guess that a simple answer would be talent, or skill, if you want. There’s little hope for a fool-proof “do it yourself” method of creating a concept device, but something pretty close to this is available in the tutorial video below:
The result of this creative process, involving the use of Photoshop CS4 (is this out yet?) is Yauhui’s concept phone (image below), borrowing HTC’s TouchFLO interface and a bit of the iPhone’s bottom side. It’s strange how all of these modern handset designs feature a very large touchscreen, extended to very edge of the phone, or even beyond it.

While concept phones are something we look up to and we always appreciate, it’s pretty rare that we get to see a concept interface. This takes a bit of work and originality, plus a mind filled with innovation and some speculation. Esato user Gavster seems to know this, as he recently showed the world his concept UI, done with the help of GDesk.
He’s keen on emulating the interface on Windows Mobile OS and the honeycomb structure really reminds me of Windows Mobile 6.5, but there’s also a “Panels” option included if I’m not mistaking.
If XPERIA’s panel-based interface met WM 6.5, what would come out of this intersection?

Time for another classic candybar cellphone design! This time we’re dealing with Vodafone 135, a pretty basic device, created by nr12 DESIGN. The phone should be a very affordable device, specially since it packs a black and white display, ideal only for texts and calls.
You should also know that this (now) concept will become real in summer 2009, as Vodafone 135 reaches the shops with a prepay offer. Notice the cool design of the phone, that uses matte and glossy areas, but also keys with haptic feeling integrated in a rubber matte, that contrasts with the general look of the handset.
