Mac Funamizu is at it again, designing yet another ingenious gadget, a handset that increases the level of its vibrations as its alarm gets closer to the time you set the wake up signal on.

No more stressful songs or radio, low or high frequencies giving you a headache at 6 a.m. Everything’s done via vibrations and all the user has to do is squeeze the phone and feel how much time is left till the wake up alarm.

You won’t even have to open your eyes, as a slight vibration means you can sleep for another hour or two, but a stronger one means that you’ll have to start feeling less numb, as you’ll have to wake up in half an hour or less.

Taiwanese researchers from the Industrial Technology Research Institute recently revealed a foldable screen concept, that can double its original size. We’ve seen many concept phones using this idea, but we’ve never come so close to seeing the real thing making it to production.

The new type of display uses a TFT-EPD technology (Thin Film Transistor Electrophoretic Display) and is limited to 5 inches for now. Here’s a neat gallery of concepts using this tech to feast your eyes on:

I stumbled upon Joseph Liang’s concept just when I was starting to believe that Motorola has no surprise for the mobile industry any more. Well, they don’t, for now, but if they plan on manufacturing this handset, things might get better for them in 2009.

First of all, this Moto concept is cute and its bright green backlight present on the navigational mechanism reminds me of the trademark Xbox 360 green.

The screen is a tad small, but that didn’t seem to bother anyone when Moto Aura was first spotted. Also, notice how the device can get smaller, by inserting its lower half in the upper part of the handset. No numeric keypad is present, so I guess this is more of a music phone, though I can see 9 dots on the nav pad, so they might be used as numeric keys…

All in all, this is a great looking device, that would be a bold move from Moto, an instant hit in Asia and a definite keeper for tweens.

Since the hugely multifunctional Ply phone there hasn’t been another prodigious device to have a look at, but now we’ve got MiLife to check out. The handset was designed by Ryan Mischkulnig and it can do so much more than your average phone.

MiLife Concept Phone is a Video Tablet, Projector, PC Keyboard

MiLife is an MP3 player, video tablet, Pocket PC, portable projector and portable console, all hidden under the same plastic/metallic shell. We’re dealing with a two-way flip phone that features 3 touchscreens and even functions as a PC keyboard… However, we wonder: can it make coffee like this concept?

Last year, during IDF 07 Intel showed the world its phone prototype powered by the Moorestown platform and we haven’t heard anything about it since. Now I stumbled upon a neat PDA concept that reminded me of Intel’s device.

Designed by Shany Poulin, this PDA seems perfect for taking pictures and web browsing, although the button placement is kind of weird.

It comes with a touchscreen display, which can be used vertically or horizontally and you should know that the device supports one hand use. This long PDA is made out of multicolor polypropelene, which is quite light. For those of you who don’t remember Intel’s prototype phone, here it is:

This idea resembles the last PSP 2 concept, but it’s still fascinating… Basically, you use this PC, you roll it up and go. The device is a baton which features two roll out flexible OLED screens, that get rigid using an electrical charge applied to them and are used as normal displays afterwards.

The Dell XPS Baton PC can work as a laptop or desktop computer, depending on the use of the screens and their positioning. The device can even be turned into some sort of tablet or an eBook, but variations can go on an on, each more astonishing than the last.

Why is this on Concept Phones? Because this is the future of all portable devices…

As far as I know, sustainable cellphones are made out of recyclable materials or have something to do with saving the nature… Following the “green” trend, Jason Meyer designed the Tribe phone, one of these sustainable devices, with a very interesting keypad and design lines that have something animalic and natural about them.

I see a snake and wood… What do you see?

In the era of people worshiping minimal music, simplicity is an advantage, case proved by the Butler phone concepts, designed by Goodmorning Technology for Topcom. Butler 500 is a cordless DECT phone and the other handset is Butler 920, a Skype phone.

The first features touch-sensitive keys and can sit in its charger either horizontally or vertically.

Sony Ericsson Paris P5i Video Review… I Want To Believe!

We’ve seen Sony Ericsson Paris P5i in dozens of pictures at the beginning of the year, some fake, Photoshopped or simply leaked by SE. On June 20 2008, it all ended with the cancellation of Paris P5i and Bei Bei, but it seems that some prototypes of the first device were somehow misplaced.

Sony Ericsson had told all of the testers to return their Paris units, or suffer the consequences, but that didn’t stop some of them from selling the devices. So, the bold reviewer below got hits hands on this unlaunched and theoretically cancelled phone and simply took a tour of its features… Will SE make YouTube take the videos down?

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

As the reviewer claims, Paris P5i comes with UIQ 3.3 and it’s the successor of the hugely successful P1i. This is a slider we’re talking about, with the same QWERTY keypad as the M600i and a touchable display. On its specs list we also find a 5 megapixel camera with flash, Memory Stick Micro card slot, Google Maps and Track ID.

And here’s part 2 of the review:

Stunning, just stunning (we took some photos, in case the videos really get pulled down, yeah we’re paranoid).

Motorola Atila Hands On Pictures Or Not?

After waiting for Motorola Atila to surprise us all with a Christmas launch, all we get are a couple of hands-on photos that reveal a cloned iPhone interface and the look of BlackBerry Storm. I’m convinced that this is not the handset we’re waiting for, but rather a Chinese copy of it, or simply a hybrid between the iPhone and Storm.

Does it look like the original photo revealed by Boy Genius Report (last image below)? Remember, we’re dealing with Moto’s killer device here, a touchscreen smartphone with HSDPA/WCDMA/HSUPA/GSM/EDGE/GPRS/WiFi support, Windows Mobile 6.1 and a Qualcomm 7201A.
