After so many tiny concept phones, one must up the stakes a notch and take a plunge into the UMPC world. Leave all Apple and Intel concepts behind and take a look at Mr. Felix Schmidberger’s design below, a beautiful UMPC designed for businessmen in their 30s with families and a passion for home cinema systems.

Compenion UMPC Concept Has Everything You Need

The device bears the name of “Compenion” and is accompanied by context-oriented docking stations. For example, you’ll use the UMPC with a home entertainment station for your living room, as it comes with an embedded laser projector and the device’s stylus can be used as a remote. This pen is not a regular one, but rather a “senstylus” with 2 action buttons up front and a thumb sensor field at the back.

You can even use this accessory as a remote by turning it around or write with the “senstylus” like with the average pen directly on the OLED touchscreen. The display above is a sliding one, which hides another OLED touchscreen beneath, showing the virtual QWERTY keyboard. Will we see this perfect UMPC hitting the market before 2015?

Hopefully, not with Vista…

Razec’s XPERIA Concept, Codename Sora

Yet another Sony Ericsson XPERIA concept phone has surfaced, courtesy of Razec from Esato, this time in the 2009 SE phones thread. It’s much the same as the previous designs, except for the fact that the display is smaller. This can mean only one thing: this is the “dumbed down” version of the phone or the “poor man’s XPERIA”, if you dare to call it that.

How ’bout a mid-end XPERIA? Some people really dislike that $800 price tag of the X1…

NamFleG Concept Could be Paris Hilton’s Phone

Vertu becomes so “last year” when your eyes meet this gorgeous concept phone, designed by Marat Kudryavtsev and bearing the name of NamFleG. It’s a luxury handset, with a sexy curve at the back and gold highlights. It’s the keys that I don’t like that much, while the edges that surround the display aren’t at all a nice design option.

All in all, precious metals could save the day for the NamFleG phone, but its looks aren’t shiny enough to hide the imperfections.

“8” Mobile Device Features Two Flipping Touchscreens

November 14th, 2008

After seeing the Pantech Flame phone-frame concept, there’s another similar gadget to check out, the “8” handheld communication device, designed by Kyung-Ryul Lim and Miyeon Kim. The “8″ features two flip-up touch displays and comes with video features, incorporates a phone and electronic dictionary.

The portable device seems a tad too long for something that theoretically should fit in your pocket, while the whole idea of having the screen show what you type near the virtual keyboard you’re using kind of sounds like a way to cross the user’s eyes.

Last thing, won’t these displays run loose after flipping out for months?

XPERIA X2 concepts were featured on this site at least two times before, but now we’re dealing with a fine piece of work, too hot to be ignored. It’s all about the colors, the Photoshop work and that neat interface. These are really cool color dripping effects, so give the creator of this work, hydro from Esato a big “thumbs up”.

Nokia Wahoo Half QWERTY Phone Gets Leaked, BlackBerry Flip 8220 Clone

November 13th, 2008

Every mobile phone news site seemed enthusiastic about the Nokia Wahoo leaked phone, but I seem to be the only one pointing fingers and saying that this is only a clone. I mean, come on, that keypad is so copied from BlackBerry Flip 8220 and it’s surprising that Nokia did something like this… Other than that, the Wahoo phone disappoints me, with its tiny display (internal - 2.2 inches, 240 x 320 pixels, TFT).

Nokia Wahoo also comes with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support plus dual-band UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900 MHz), a half QWERTY keypad and an external display (1.36 inches, 128 x 160 pixels, TFT). The handset incorporates a 2 megapixel camera and also features Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a 2.5 mm headset jack (whyyy?) and a battery with 4 hours of UMTS talk time.

Wahoo will hit AT&T pretty soon and its name seems to be somehow related to Yahoo!, so we might see some services from the mauve giant on the handset.

Pantech Flame Phone is Also a Digital Frame

We’ve seen concept phones that are brilliant cameras, MP3 players, camcorders, projectors, sometimes even razors and coffee makers, but a handset that’s also used as a digital frame is a first! I’m talking about the Pantech Flame phone, designed by Jung Woo Baik, a pretty cool idea accompanied by a neat-looking device.

Pantech Flame Phone is Also a Digital Frame

This camera phone is a foldable one and can be placed like a flip calendar on your desk or it can be used as your average digital frame. Pantech Flame features a 5 megapixel camera placed on the front side of the phone, near the keyboard and it can take really neat photos for you to display on your “frame”. Let’s hope that the rest of specs are up to par with the handset’s level of innovation.

Solar Phone Concept is Green, Although Black

November 12th, 2008

Let me say this right from the start… If there’s a concept phone that must be left in the sun all day so it’ll be charged with solar energy, won’t it become incredibly hot because it’s black? Criticism aside, we love the design of the Solar concept phone, typical candybar, but the back side is the really fascinating part.

There’s a removable back cover which seems to include mini solar panels and it can  be changed with another similar unit, for longer battery life. Designed by Warin Thanathawee, from Bangkok, Thailand, the Solar Phone can be used in the direct sunlight for an extra energy boost, in case the battery is dying.

When we’re hungry for fresh technology and new designs what community do we visit? The Esato board, where usually we find a bunch of talented people who are willing to design future and gorgeous Sony Ericsson handsets just out of pure passion. Now, there’s a Sony Ericsson 2009 Concepts thread open, so we’re in for some fresh devices.

We break the ice with none other than J. Havrlant, who designed the Retro P902 concept shown below and the beautiful Sony Ericsson W905 handset from two days ago.

T3’s 01 Phone is The Perfect Concept!

November 11th, 2008

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (10 votes, average: 5 out of 5)

Our weary eyes have rested upon the perfect design, the flawless victory of concept phones over consumerism and stupid marketing decisions. The 01 Phone is a T3 and Alloy initiative, which received the popular vote, as the T3 readers had their say on the features they wanted on the device. Alloy are truly “design gods”, as T3 call them and the reason is available for you to see below.

T3’s campaign might even end with the creation of the device and if this makes it to the real world market, consider me a buyer. Now, let’s check out the device for a bit… First, know that it comes with a mini phone at the back, a working handset with the basic functions, which is no bigger than an USB stick with a tad more personality. You can ever wear this mini handset around your wrist, as it’s a flexible gadget.

At the back of the sliding QWERTY keypad you’ll find two wireless headphones, while this concept also brings a brand new stylus design into action: the multi touch one. It looks very much like a compass, but it’ll be great for pinching and grabbing photos and zooming around Internet pages. Add a 5 megapixel camera in the mix and perfection is one step closer…

The fully-customisable contextual keyboard deserves a category of its own, as it even stunned us and we’ve seen our share of concept phones. Imagine a keyboard that changes depending on the phone mode and function you’re accessing. In gaming mode, it’ll show the gaming buttons, lit with a bright green glow, while the GPS mode makes the keys glow purple and allows you to access nav system specific controls.

There’s also an audio mode and texting/SMS interface for this uber-cool keyboard, the first accompanied by a red glow and showing audio controls, while the second brings up a T9 keypad with a yellow glitter in SMS mode.
