This mystery concept phone I’ve spotted on Flickr was created by kichu overclocked and it seems to be an AMD handset. Athfone’s keypad is no news to me, neither is its form factor, but the video features seem to be pretty good. At least that’s what I can say by having a glance at the handset’s display.

AMD Athfone, Mystery Phone With Cool Graphics

AMD Athfone was created, according to its designer with the aid of Adobe Photoshop CS2, by using vectoring. That “Game on” motto might as well be the device’s purpose, but with such an input mechanism, who would play games on this handset?

This concept phone’s main feature is its sliding sensor pad, that takes interaction and input to the next level. The handset was designed by Sang hoon Lee and published on Coroflot, as for the pad, it’s made out of tiny 3D dots that sense the movement of the user’s fingers. Such a technology is useful for writing and drawing, only relying on your fingers.

OK, I’ll admit, it’s not a funny headline, but what can you say when you’re dealing with a made in Germany? This Nokia N88 conceptual design surfaced on NokiaPort.de and seems to be the next level of evolution of the N series. TomTom navigation is featured, Bluetooth, the usual keypad is in place and a decent list of apps as you can see on the display.

What’s the deal with the date on the screen? Do the designers know something we don’t? Is Nokia N88 destined to reach the market this summer/autumn?

PDAs seem to be ready to go more casual when it comes to design, or at least the two concepts below are. Rolly and Budy were designed by Nikola Knezevic for CREAT, of Tokyo. The 2 PDAs seem to fit the Japanese market perfectly, as they’re the product of research, studies and the materialization of current trends.

Rolly and Budy, 2 PDAs That Will Be Big in Japan

Why do the Japanese love handheld consoles and other such gaming devices that even PDAs start to look like them? Well, other than that Rolly and Budy seem to be packed with apps and enough features to make any ASUS rival jealous.

This may not be a phone, but it’s surely the next best thing, specially if you’re a music listener and music maker. Designed by Chip Beal, from Oakland, California, Sound is a mix and mash-up device that uses a touchscreen interface allowing you to create and mix music, just like a DJ.

Sound also allows you to send the songs you created to your friends and seems small enough to be carried anywhere by an aspiring artist.

The great designers from the Esato board have accustomed us to some great releases of concept phones and lately we’ve seen a lot of teasers showing us the future of many . One of these is the one you can see below, Sony Ericsson Cybershot C990 designed by sunils120:

As the image’s description states, Sony Ericsson C990 features a 5.0 MP camera with autofocus, 3X optical zoom, red eye reduction, face recognition, image stabilisation and a xenon flash. It’s the father of all cybershots, but we’ll have to wait for the final version to drool upon.

“Floating Beauvalanche” UI Predicts the Future of Fashion Phones

March 14th, 2008

Provoke Design from Finland shows us the “Comme des Garcons” UI brand, a concept for now, that already sounds good for any fashionista out there. Their demographics are fashion-followers, 60% women, 10% of western population. The theme of this beautiful design is capturing beauty in liquid or better said “floating beauvalanche”.

Floating Beauvalanche UI Predicts the Future of Fashion Phones

What you can see in the image above is an original UI, but what’s the deal with the handset it’s used on? Could this be a future touchscreen phone for trendsetters? Since Provoke Design are Finnish, I can already think that we’ll see the interface on Nokia fashion phones, but that’s only an assumption. Would look good on a Nokia Morph or Open, though…

Firely Multi-fly, the iPod Game Boy Phone

March 14th, 2008

If so many names in a headline got you confused, you should know that designer Gabriel Prero has the teens’ preferences all figured out in his concept design. The Firely Multi-fly is featured on Coroflot and promises to be an alternative for your Sidekick, RAZR, , iPod and Nintendo DS. It’s a concept phone that targets the youngsters, the so-called “tweens” who change phones every year or so.

Firely Multi-fly, the iPod Game Boy Phone

Studies have shown that tweens give up their handsets in favour of others every 18 months, so Firely Multi-fly tries to solve this issue. It can even appeal to a child and it’s got parental controls, so it’s a fine alternative to the Heart Phone. This concept is also up for gaming sessions, as it resembles an old-school Game Boy, but puts on an entirely different game.

The list of features doesn’t end here, though, as the handset can use expandable accessories, just like the iPod’s gear and even cartridges for games and other functions. If you thought that the Modu phone was unique with all of its jackets, wait till you see this! Firely Multi-fly comes with a camera cartridge and interchangeable keypad, so it can morph into a console, iPod or cameraphone at any time.

Sony Ericsson K950i Bravia Phone Concept

March 13th, 2008

Muhammad-Oli from the Esato Board shows us the future of phones through this beautiful K950i Bravia. It features a pretty big touchscreen, landscape mode and that Bravia branding which pretty much describes the handset’s use. It’s a “cinema phone” if you want or a handset that will be loved by folks who like to watch high definition movies on the go.

Sony Ericsson K950i Bravia Phone Concept

Of course, there’s the iPhone, the PSP or the Nokia N95 8GB to choose instead, but would trade those for Sony’s famous Bravia branding? Notice the multimedia controls on the phone’s left side, as they show that this Sony Ericsson is designed for landscape viewing of movies and photos.

Keep in mind that K950i Bravia is a slider and it features a decent keypad, so you won’t be relying on that touchscreen alone.

Nokia Open Phone Features a Flexible LCD

March 12th, 2008

Is it OK if I say that I’m a fan of this fan-shaped Nokia concept? Although it seems borrowed from Star Trek or Minority Report, this handset might as well be the future of all mobile phones, now that we’re fantasizing about devices like the Morph.

Nokia Open Phone Features a Flexible LCD

“Open” (if that’s the name of the concept) features a flexible LCD and supports 4G connectivity. It can easily be considered a device that one-ups the Morph or the Nokia 888 or just another piece of Goa’uld technology that we’ll never get our hands on.
