Sony has apparently filed for a touchscreen PSP patent, or so the word goes round, but no official confirmation till now. We’re dealing with leaked info from the patent office, that mentions a “digital tactile pixels” system used in a phone, media player, web browsing/e-mail device and navigation system.
Sure sounds like a PSP Phone to me, but a touchscreen PSP is just as good.

This pic’s name speaks for itself: “PSP Vaio Fake by Yon”, not that it’s a bad thing, as even the most unbelievable concepts have a pretty interesting idea. The good old PSP got redesigned and branded Vaio and it now comes with an incorporated webcam, a Flash LED, a bigger memory stick, an incorporated microphone, a 3.2 megapixel camera with a Xenon Flash and backlit buttons.
Tell me it’s also a phone and I’m committed for life…

Check out the following concept, one of the most complex console/phone designs I’ve ever seen. So, the PSP finally gets a touchscreen, a better interface, a healthy pack of apps and a QWERTY keypad. I don’t quite see myself texting quickly on that though.
And that display would better be shock resistant and tough… Other than that, the iWish is a piece of heaven I’d get my hands on, if it were real.

It’s been a while since the last PSP phone concept, but the device below might as well be a candidate for that name, specially since it’s (supposedly) a Sony Ericsson handset. Meet The Street Hunter phone, designed by Remi Tod, who probably fancies chocolate bars as much as we do, since his device is based on components that look like such sweets.
The “chocolate bars” include the phone’s keys and they’ll switch position as you pass from the phone mode, to gaming console mode or MP3 player mode. The audio player is probably the most convincing of the three, while the console really made me curios. Is this worthy of a PSP Phone branding? We think it is.

Well Nokia knows better than to give a handheld gaming device another go, considering their lack of success with the N-Gage. While they’re getting ready for a N-Gage platform experience, Cromosoma 23 from Coroflot shows us Nokia DA-GAME, a handheld console designed for father and son experiences.
I see that the device only features a D-pad plus two more buttons on its back and a pretty decent display. Unless that display is a touchscreen, we won’t be playing anything better than Tetris, Asteroids or Pong. I guess they’ll do, specially if these gadgets are bought by parents for their 5 year old who has never heard of the PSP.

A person who’s read the last year’s mobile industry news should know by now that portable consoles will become extinct in the next 5 to 10 years, being replaced by phones with the same features, if not better. However, while they’re here, those portable gaming devices still make gamers go crazy.
Just look at the Microsoft Xune concept below, a combination between Zune, iPod, Xbox and Sony Mylo.
Basically we’re dealing with the Xbox 360 controller with a touch of Mylo and iPod Nano. The console also features shoulder buttons, a touchwheel with a center button (a la Xbox 360), a sliding keyboard and 4:3 ratio aspect ratio screen. The keyboard will be used for web surfing, email and chat, while the device is compatible with the Xbox 360 and Windows Media Center.
It seems that the designer of this concept console also thinks about a widescreen version. However, I’m already thinking about Skype on this beauty, some memory card support plus touchscreen and accelerometer. Here’s a video collection of all Xbox portable concepts so far:

As I promised yesterday, I added most of the PSP 2 concept designs that were featured on Kotaku to a video that you can check out below. See the best two concepts in the previous post and the full list of designs on the original site.

The gaming folks of Kotaku have come up with a neat PSP 2 design contest, which showed us what people think of the next generation of Sony’s portable consoles. A couple of them are interesting to say the least, but my favourite is the very first one you can admire below. It’s got a touchscreen, a 16GB flash drive, a webcam, a PS2 emulator and tons of other features, but still… it’s no PSP Phone.
Another concept I digged was this “bogus design” below, created by Torokun. This PSP 2 features a touchscreen with a multi touch sensor, an 852 x 480 and 16:9 display to be more precise and a pretty neat sliding mechanism. It may remind some of you of what Nokia was trying to do back in the days with some of its handsets, but this concept goes far beyond and still manages to include that UMD drive we don’t need, plus the useful memory slot.
Check out Kotaku’s site for more PSP 2 designs and you’ll probably see a video of these designs in here tomorrow!

After seeing dozens of PSP Phone concepts, we finally stumbled upon a patent of the device, only to be surprised by how much it resembles the original iPhone patent. Sony’s patent application is called “Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display“, which pretty much defines what you can see below.
We could be dealing with a special Sony Ericsson handset, featuring a touchscreen display, accelerometer (or some sort of orientation system) and haptics feedback. However, before comparing this device to the iPhone, we should be taking into account the fact that Sony filed this patent application on August 30, 2006, months before the launch of Apple’s device.
Does this look like a plausible PSP Phone to you? For me it spells “Nintendo DS” a bit, but that may be my usual copycat paranoia.

Since we’re tired of only hearing PSP 2 and PSP Phone rumours, let’s give good old Nintendo a chance and check out their new DS concept, designed by Phil Nolan. Can anyone say “crisp display?” It seems we’re dealing with a thinner device, which features a quality display plus the same control system Nintendo has been using for the past years.
Its designer states that the console is inspired by the Wii, PSP and iPhone. The quality of the graphics charms us enough to really want this baby for Christmas 2008.
