SE’s not just into the megapixel race, as they prepare a 12 MP cameraphone, but they really want to change something in the photo functions compartment of their handsets. As proof stands their recent patent application that improves a camera’s zoom, by making the process automatic. It’s as easy as moving the cameraphone away from your body in order to zoom in and getting the handset closer for a zoom out.
This involves the use of accelerometers and proximity sensors, no biggie, as most modern handsets have those, but the idea is simplifying the task of taking a picture on the go.

In the latest Batman movie, “The Dark Knight”, the superhero uses Gotham’s handsets to “look through walls” in order to find out the position of the villains… Seems that this feature will soon be heading to KDDI phones as well, because the scientists of this company created a prototype that can use geomagnetic sensors, accelerometers and GPS to reveal its location.

This futuristic gizmo will render its surroundings on-screen in OpenGL and even cover areas that are not in sight. Is this the beginning of a huge Big Brother experiment conducted with the aid of our handsets?
You might not want to take your phone with you in order to hear someone calling the next time you take a shower… Who knows who’s spying?

The first Android smartphone, T-Mobile G1 was last week’s star for sure, but how about the concept phones that should have been the Google Phones? Here’s a brand new one for you, designed by Eduardo Altamirano Segovia. The concept device is based on the interaction of the screen’s centerline with the user’s thumb.

This G-Phone features an OLED screen and a curved front surface, plus an accelerometer that detects the handset’s position and changes the functions of the “call-hang” or “yes-no” buttons. It’s a great design that will maybe make it to Google and HTC’s drawing board, as they start working on the next Android device.

Boy Genius Report managed to get their hands on a photo of the unknown till now LG Xenon. Turns out that it’s an AT&T branded handset that will be available at Christmas time. Hmm… a slider device with a QWERTY keypad a day after the T-Mobile G1 announcement? Do I smell rivalry?

A quick look at LG Xenon’s specs reveals the presence of a 3 megapixel camera, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, an accelerometer and a 950 mAh battery. Add the usual Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 to that, plus a proximity sensor and 100 MB of internal memory and a microSD slot that adds another 16GB in the mix.
LG Xenon also incorporates a 240 x 480, 2.8″ LCD display and an EMP U330 Lite chipset, all of these “hidden” inside a 105.5 x 53.5 x 15.8 mm shell.

As I was saying in a post about the Peugeot 360 concept, this “360″ branding is all over the place now, like on consoles, tooth paste and Yahoo services. Phones are probably the only ones lacking this branding, but there’s a new “sheriff” in town, with the above-mentioned branding. Designed by Eno Setiawan and looking hot, the 360 Touch Phone is a promising smartphone.

It comes with a rotating screen, touch pad control, touch pen, a camera with flash, an accelerometer and wireless charging. And for the ones that’ll jump at my throat for comparing concepts with the iPhone, this is NOT an iPhone clone.

Summer’s coming and there’s the usual need for music phones to entertain us on the beach, at least till we get the call to get back at the office. One such musical companion is Sony Ericsson W680i, pertaining to the Walkman series, but don’t fret, as it’s only a concept phone right now, designed by sunils120, Esato board user.

As the designer states, this isn’t the final version and we’ll be seeing some updates, but let’s check out the specs for now:
- 2.0 megapixel camera with 4X Digital Zoom & Geotagging
- Edge, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and Integrated GPS Module
- Walkman 3.0 Media Player
- Sense Me and Shake Control
- Accelerometer, Pedometer, Track ID functions
- 85 MB Internal Memory upgradeable to 8 GB Memory Stick Micro(M2)

After seeing dozens of PSP Phone concepts, we finally stumbled upon a patent of the device, only to be surprised by how much it resembles the original iPhone patent. Sony’s patent application is called “Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display“, which pretty much defines what you can see below.

We could be dealing with a special Sony Ericsson handset, featuring a touchscreen display, accelerometer (or some sort of orientation system) and haptics feedback. However, before comparing this device to the iPhone, we should be taking into account the fact that Sony filed this patent application on August 30, 2006, months before the launch of Apple’s device.
Does this look like a plausible PSP Phone to you? For me it spells “Nintendo DS” a bit, but that may be my usual copycat paranoia.
