We’ve heard about dual-touchscreen devices, about dual-SIM handets and even about phones that can use up to 3 SIMs, but a dual-device is surely new for us. Couple-IT is basically a twin gadget, that includes a dual-touchscreen cellphone and a laptop-style smartphone, introduced for the first time at , in Barcelona.

couple_it.jpg

Each of them uses a SIM, but all of your content and information will be stored on both devices, as they’re permanently synchronized with the aid of the network in use. This concept was created by Alloy and it seems to be a sollution for those seeking an alternative to the Palm Foleo, or just another companion to ease your work. The dual-touchscreen handset is a clamshell device, while the “mini-laptop” is an ultracompact smartphone.

Truth be told I fancy the clamshell phone more than the smartphone, as I was never a fan of companion devices and PDAs, in the era of handset shrinkage and slimmer phones.

You might already know that Nvidia showcased its latest chipset during the at Barcelona and it seemed to be running smoothly on a neat and good-looking device. It even faced the challenge of being connected to a 60 inch plasma screen display graphics that would even make a PlayStation console jealous.

The fact is that Nvidia’s new device powered by the APX 2500 chip managed to run a high definition H.264 720p version of Monsters Inc. on the above-mentioned plasma screen. Place this baby at the heart of an iPhone and we’ve got pure gold and a device that’s good enough to bury any out there. In case you’re interested, here are the specs of Nvidia handset: Windows Mobile OS and a 65nm chip composed of 4 parts.

Among those, there’s an ARM 11 running the show at 750MHZ, then comes an audio/video core coding and encoding H.264 files and an imaging core with support for cameras with a 12 megapixel resolution. Last but not least of the APX 2500 cores is an OpenGL ES 2.0/Direct3D Mobile 3D graphics core, which gets the whole “PlayStation 2 resolution” thing going. The interface suited these specs perfectly, taking the iPhone UI to the next level, thanks to Mac OS X-style widgets and a carousel interface.

Think we’ll see a handset powered by chip to one-up this beauty coming from TI and Qualcomm? I doubt it…

Spyker got its own booth at Mobile World Congress 2008 and it was there to showcase some sort of iPhone clone, but they weren’t too keen on sharing their innovation with the rest of the world. We don’t know the specs of this handset, except for that nasty keypad. I said “nasty” as the “Home” button is placed straight in the middle of the other buttons, while the keys are too close to the edge of the device. A full QWERTY keyboard would have been much more welcome, from Spyker if you ask me…

If Greenpeace ever dared to criticise Nokia for not being environmentally-friendly enough, they should take it back, since the company have just shown a great Remade concept phone, at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. Check it out in the video above and I have to say that the background music is quite nice. The Remade model is made out of recycled materials, ranging from metal parts to the plastic we usually throw away in our garbage cans. I have to say that this device looks pretty nice, a bit “Asian” though, reminding me of the Japanese phones. And when you think that they used aluminium cans for its body and old used tires for its keypads… Read the rest of the entry for an extra video of the device.

Let’s call this a “mystery phone”, as that’s what it is. We’ve only got this picture above and tons of assumptions. It might as well be a sci-fi bracelet, pretending to be a phone, but rest assured that there’s a display in there, although you can’t see it. This device seems to be folded, with the aid of 3 hinges and that means that we’re dealing with a rather long phone, when it not gone “cube mode”. The concept was demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona by ZTE, Zhong Xing Telecommunication Equipment Company.

This is one original piece of work, courtesy of the Indian phone maker Spice, that developed this device, ideal for the visually impaired. It’s been introduced at the Mobile World Congress 2008 and the manufacturer kept it simple and used low tech, obviously not including a screen. The cellphone’s keypad uses Braille and voice technology to inform the visually impaired user about the number he’s dialing. Since this “Braille Phone” lacks a display its battery life has been greatley prolongued, lasting 400 hours in standby and providing 4 hours of talk time.

The phone also features 2 LEDs, a red one that signals the low battery status and a blue one showing the status of the network connectivity. Spice’s device weighs 70 grams and measures 105 x 45 x 15mm and it should be available for a more than decent price, $20, but not on the iPhone-craving markets.
