This DoCoMo concept is somewhat familiar to me, since I’ve seen joint handsets before and even devices that split and come together again in order to create a single unit. This modular handset created by DoCoMo is a working prototype and you can see that one of the parts is used as a keyboard/remote for the other phone, but the devices also work as standalone units.
More action at DoCoMo’s Mobile World Congress 2009 booth:

Boy, am I sick of seeing so many new smartphones launched at Mobile World Congress 2009?! Let’s have a break and check out this simple device, the Sony Simplicity concept phone, that’s pretty bulky and seems to lack high end features. It appears to have a touchscreen display, an intuitive interface and a pretty strange form factor.
No trace of a physical keypad, so the handset could pack more touch displays and a virtual keyboard. My intuition and experience tells me that the circular hinge mechanism might incorporate a projector, but maybe I’m an idealist, looking for hot features on a mid-level handset.

There are 3 major Nokia leaks that must not be overlooked, specially now that Mobile World Congress 2009 took off in style. First, there are 2 neat touchscreen handsets leaked in a N97 presentation video, Ivalo and Madeleine, pictured below. Then there’s Nokia N86, the company’s first 8 megapixel cameraphone.
Ivalo (left) features a 3.5 inches wide touchscreen display, 32 GB ROM, a 5 megapixel camera, TV-out and Bluetooth, while Madeleine (right) packs a QWERTY keyboard and a touch display.
Nokia Madeleine’s form factor reminds me of the N97, with the sliding QWERTY and tilting screen design. This device also features GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, N-Gage support, gaming keys and FM radio.
Moving on to the hot leaked Nokia cameraphone, N86 (above) surfaced by mistake in a press document that covered the Nokia-Carl Zeiss partnership. It packs an 8 megapixel camera, a Xenon flash and a display that’s too small to be a touchscreen. Will any of these devices get launched at MWC 2009? There are three more days to find out!

It’s real folks! Sony Ericsson announced today the first 12 megapixel cameraphone, known as Idou and expected to be released in the second half of 2009. What we know is that the device is still being developed and it packs a 3.5 inch touchscreen display and a 12.1 megapixel camera. Sony Ericsson Idou uses the “next generation of Symbian” and combines the features of the Walkman and Cyber-shot series.
Beautiful pictures of the first Sony Ericsson 12 megapixel cameraphone are available below and we’ll probably learn more about the device during Mobile World Congress 2009:

I knew that this Sony Ericsson device was familiar! After stumbling upon the Sony Ericsson QWERTY messaging handset pictured below, I had the feeling that I had seen it somewhere before. It looks very much like a previously leaked shot of an Acer messaging smartphone, that you can also check out after the break.
The swivelling keypad mechanism is used by both devices, although it seems that the Acer smartphone features a couple more keys on its QWERTY keyboard and lacks the SE-specific nav pad. Mobile World Congress 2009 starts in a few hours, so we might be able to compare both devices, side by side maybe…

Oh my God! I didn’t expect to see the 8 megapixel camera – Walkman player combo too soon, but here it is and it’s known as Hikaru, NOT a Sony Ericsson concept, but a real device. Hikaru is a slider phone with metal housing and probably the only really high end music handset in years…
It’s got a 2.6 inches display, 8 GB memory, Walkman player 4.0, a 3.5 mm audio jack, stereo speakers and music keys. Expect it to be announced at Mobile World Congress 2009 and launched at the end of Q2 2009. Brilliant!

Yeah, Acer is readying a smartphone with the aid of E-Ten technology, Asus is prepping its Eee Phone, while a bunch of Android handsets are probably getting their last bugs fixed right now… And all of these preparations are made for the big event, Mobile World Congress 2009, starting next month.
And don’t even get me started on HTC and their Windows Mobile + Nvidia Tegra devices…
Now i-mate is ready to join the game, since msmobiles is reporting that they will introduce a smartphone “like nothing else”. Since they’re quite keen on working with Microsoft, it might just be a Windows Mobile 6.5 handset and what you can see above is only a mockup done by Unwired View, their vision on how the i-mate smartphone will look like.
Will we be looking back at this mockup in two weeks time and feeling that it was accurate or will it be too awesome for words?
