While everyone’s focusing on 3G iPhone rumours, one might easily notice that there might be another Apple-branded surprise coming in June. How about an iPlay console launched by Steve Jobs’ company, just in time to battle the Nokia N-Gage platform?

Of course, these are only rumours we’re dealing with, but the prospective of such a device sure sounds nice, on a market where the PSP and Nintendo DS rule and will continue to rule for at least 2 or 3 years. We’ve seen what the iPhone SDK can do, in terms of gaming, so the potential is there, now it’s up to the new hardware to do the magic.

Check out the following concept, one of the most complex console/phone designs I’ve ever seen. So, the PSP finally gets a touchscreen, a better interface, a healthy pack of apps and a QWERTY keypad. I don’t quite see myself texting quickly on that though.

And that display would better be shock resistant and tough… Other than that, the iWish is a piece of heaven I’d get my hands on, if it were real.

Sony PSP 2 Concept Designs, as Seen by Gamers

The gaming folks of Kotaku have come up with a neat PSP 2 design contest, which showed us what people think of the next generation of Sony’s portable consoles. A couple of them are interesting to say the least, but my favourite is the very first one you can admire below. It’s got a touchscreen, a 16GB flash drive, a webcam, a PS2 emulator and tons of other features, but still… it’s no .

Another concept I digged was this “bogus design” below, created by Torokun. This PSP 2 features a touchscreen with a multi touch sensor, an 852 x 480 and 16:9 display to be more precise and a pretty neat sliding mechanism. It may remind some of you of what Nokia was trying to do back in the days with some of its handsets, but this concept goes far beyond and still manages to include that UMD drive we don’t need, plus the useful memory slot.

Check out Kotaku’s site for more PSP 2 designs and you’ll probably see a video of these designs in here tomorrow!

PSP Phone Patent Goes iPhone

After seeing dozens of , we finally stumbled upon a patent of the device, only to be surprised by how much it resembles the original iPhone patent. Sony’s patent application is called “Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display“, which pretty much defines what you can see below.

psp_phone_patent.jpg

We could be dealing with a special Sony Ericsson handset, featuring a touchscreen display, accelerometer (or some sort of orientation system) and haptics feedback. However, before comparing this device to the iPhone, we should be taking into account the fact that Sony filed this patent application on August 30, 2006, months before the launch of Apple’s device.

Does this look like a plausible PSP Phone to you? For me it spells “Nintendo DS” a bit, but that may be my usual copycat paranoia.

Stardate 18-02-2008… These are the voyages of the starship Rumorprise, bound to find the PSP Phone any minute now. It’s barely reached planet Stuff (magazine) and it seems that the device will feature a 480 x 272 display, a mini analog stick and finally lack that useless UMD drive. We’ll be playing game via M2 and what you can see above are (as mentioned) scans from Stuff magazine, which I spotted thanks to the folks of engadget. There’s also a supposed launch date in the magazine: July-December plus a few other details you’ll find out by reading the rest of the entry.

You do not have to believe this rumor! However, all of us PSP fans can’t simply ignore such a piece of information. SEfanatics brings out the news, showing a page from Sony Magazine, which announces a “PSP-Style Phone” for February. February what? Maybe 2009 or even 2010. It seems that it will even hit the shops, as early as, well this month, unless we’ve got the year all wrong. Where’s the official launch? The teasing? The party? The tech show? That’s surely an indicator that we’ll see a PSP Phone at next year-s Mobile World Congress and maybe it will be launched a year from now. Just maybe…

PSP Phone

Just spotted this pic right here on techdigest.tv and was wondering about the possibility of getting the PSP Phone, courtesy of Sony Ericsson, instead of the good old Sony (main company). Also, I’m quite puzzled to see that this concept features a 2.0 MP camera. I guess they would be able to include at least a 5 MP one. With the recent Skype update of the PSP, who needs a phone any more?
