Retro gaming has inspired countless Game Boy recreations over the years, but very few attempt to rethink the experience instead of simply recreating the original hardware. That’s exactly what PaperBoy S3 does. Created by Wenting Zhang, this DIY handheld pairs a Game Boy emulator with an E Ink display and achieves something that was long considered impractical: 60Hz gameplay on an electronic paper screen.
From an industrial design perspective, PaperBoy S3 is particularly intriguing because it transforms a development kit originally intended for smart home interfaces and electronic labels into a minimalist handheld console inspired by Nintendo’s iconic design. The 3D-printed enclosure closely follows the familiar Game Boy proportions, complete with a traditional D-pad and A/B button layout, while the software cleverly integrates modern Save and Load controls into the top of the display. The result feels like a product from an alternate timeline where Nintendo experimented with E Ink technology instead of LCDs.
The real innovation, however, lies beneath the surface. Conventional E Ink displays are notoriously slow, making them ideal for e-readers but unsuitable for fast-moving games. Zhang overcame this limitation by creating a custom display driver that refreshes only the active gameplay area instead of the entire screen. This dramatically reduces latency, allowing the handheld to deliver surprisingly fluid 60 frames per second while preserving the distinctive grayscale appearance associated with the original Game Boy.
At the heart of the project is the discontinued M5Stack PaperS3 development board, powered by an ESP32-S3 dual-core microcontroller and featuring a 4.7-inch 960 × 540 E Ink touchscreen. The emulator also benefits from the original Game Boy’s modest 160 × 144-pixel resolution, meaning only a small portion of the display needs to be processed. Multiple frame buffers fit directly into the ESP32-S3’s SRAM, while intelligent dithering recreates the Game Boy’s iconic four shades of gray with impressive accuracy.
The ESP32-S3’s dual-core architecture splits the workload efficiently, dedicating one core to Game Boy emulation and the other to graphics rendering and audio processing. Despite the modest hardware, classics such as Pokémon Blue, Super Mario Land, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening run remarkably well. PaperBoy S3 also supports Bluetooth controllers alongside touchscreen input and includes convenient quick-save and quick-load functions. Audio remains the biggest compromise, as the board lacks a proper speaker and relies on a small piezo buzzer to reproduce the Game Boy’s familiar sound effects and music.
As an industrial design concept, PaperBoy S3 proves that innovation doesn’t always require faster processors or brighter OLED displays. Instead, it demonstrates how thoughtful engineering and creative problem-solving can breathe new life into existing technologies. By combining low-power hardware, clever software optimization, and nostalgic aesthetics, Wenting Zhang has created one of the most original retro gaming projects in recent years—one that challenges preconceived notions about what E Ink displays are capable of.
