Just days after the first alleged design sketches of Huawei’s upcoming Mate XT2 surfaced online, we’re now getting what appears to be the first render inspired by those leaks. The biggest change? Huawei could abandon the original Z-shaped triple-folding mechanism in favor of a new inward-folding “U” design.
Rumors suggest the Mate XT2 could debut as early as September, or by October at the latest. Huawei is reportedly looking to capitalize on Samsung’s apparent decision to pause development of its own tri-fold phone, instead focusing on a wider Fold-style device and, according to recent speculation, a possible rollable handset. The render comes from Chinese tipster Fixed Focus and shows both side panels folding inward over the center display, leaving no part of the flexible screen exposed when the device is closed.
That would address one of the biggest compromises of the original Mate XT, whose outer display section remained vulnerable to scratches. In this concept, Huawei also adds a dedicated external cover display, making the phone more practical to use without unfolding it. The camera island has been redesigned as well, switching from the previous octagonal module to a circular layout that aligns with rumors surrounding the upcoming Mate 90 series. The rear panel is shown wrapped in textured vegan leather, with the signature deep red finish making a return.
Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed. But considering the engineering complexity of a triple-folding smartphone, along with ongoing component costs and broader inflation, a price tag of around €3,000 wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if Huawei sticks with this ambitious form factor.
