Huawei MatePad Mini leaks: a compact OLED tablet aiming straight at the iPad Mini

September 4th is shaping up to be a big day for Huawei. Not only does it mark the kickoff of IFA 2025 in Berlin, but the company has also lined up its own launch event in China. Alongside the much-teased triple-foldable Mate XTs and a fresh pair of wireless earbuds, Huawei is preparing to introduce a brand-new small-form tablet: the MatePad Mini.

Fresh renders shared by leaker Digital Chat Station give us a closer look at what to expect. The MatePad Mini is built around a sub-9-inch OLED display with razor-thin bezels and a punch-hole selfie camera tucked into the top right corner. The rear houses a circular single-lens camera, while the presence of a call interface in the renders hints at optional SIM support for cellular connectivity.

Huawei is clearly positioning this as a compact and lightweight device, with a slim profile and narrow borders all around. At launch, at least two colors seem to be in the works: a mint green variant with a playful vibe and a more muted grey/black model that feels suited for business.

Specs remain mostly under wraps, but the screen size is rumored to land at 8.9 inches. Stylus support also seems likely, given Huawei’s push around productivity and note-taking apps in its larger tablets. What’s less certain is the performance profile—while compact tablets often double as gaming machines, Huawei’s silicon limitations could make high-end mobile gaming a stretch here.

We’ll know more on September 4th, when the MatePad Mini officially takes the stage. Until then, the question is less about whether Huawei can build a small tablet and more about whether it can carve out a meaningful niche against Apple’s iPad Mini, the clear reference point for this category.
