The upcoming Huawei Pura X Max is shaping up to be one of the more unusual foldables of 2026. Ahead of its April 20 debut, official renders reveal a noticeably wider form factor and a lineup of five colors: black, white, blue, gold, and orange. The design makes it clear that Huawei is experimenting with a different approach to foldable phones, one that pre-empts the iPhone Fold.

The Pura X Max follows the smaller Huawei Pura X but expands the concept into a larger device. When opened, it is expected to reveal a display between 7.6 and 7.69 inches, closer in proportion to a compact tablet than a tall smartphone. Reports suggest a 16:10 aspect ratio, which would suit multitasking, documents, and media consumption better than the narrow portrait ratios used on most foldables. In contrast, the cover screen reportedly measures around 5.5 inches, which is enough for quick interactions without unfolding the device.

The timing is notable. Other manufacturers are expected to explore wider foldable designs later this year, including the rumored Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a long-awaited Apple iPhone Fold. However, Huawei is pushing the concept earlier, continuing its attempt to differentiate through form factor rather than just specifications.

The exterior design shows a flat frame and a horizontally aligned camera module on the back, housing multiple sensors. The outer display uses a centered punch-hole camera, while the internal display features a selfie camera positioned off-center, a placement that could help minimize distraction during full-screen use. These details point to a focus on practical usability rather than purely cosmetic changes.

Huawei has already opened pre-orders in China, revealing several memory configurations: 12 GB of RAM with 256 GB of storage, 12 GB with 512 GB, and two 16 GB options, one with 512 GB and a Collector’s Edition with 1 TB of storage. The five available colors make this one of the more varied foldable launches in terms of personalization.

On the hardware side, some reports mention a possible Kirin 9030 chipset, but this remains unconfirmed. The official reveal is expected on April 20 alongside the Huawei Pura 90 Series, which should clarify performance details, battery capacity, and international availability.

Instead of competing on ultra-thin designs or camera counts alone, Huawei appears to be betting on a wider, more practical screen that bridges the gap between a phone and a tablet. If this approach proves successful, it could influence how future foldables evolve, challenging the tall, narrow formats that currently dominate the segment.
