Most kid-friendly phones are simply smartphones with parental controls layered on top. Lenovo is taking a different approach with the AI Student Phone L1, a purpose-built device that removes distractions instead of trying to manage them. Launched in China for 299 yuan (around $44), the phone ditches the web browser, social media, games and, according to current reports, app sideloading.
The compact candy-bar device features a 1.83-inch touchscreen, 4G connectivity and a durable body protected by Panda Glass. Its most interesting feature is a dedicated AI button, giving students one-touch access to an AI assistant for homework help, translations and subject lookups without sending them down the rabbit hole of a traditional web search.
Beyond education, Lenovo has equipped the L1 with practical tools for everyday life. It reportedly supports QR code payments with parental spending limits, alongside GPS tracking and an SOS button, allowing children to stay connected and make small purchases while parents retain control.
The AI Student Phone L1 is currently exclusive to China, but its design philosophy stands out. Rather than restricting a full-featured smartphone through software, Lenovo has built a device around focus, communication and learning from the very beginning—a refreshing alternative in an age dominated by endless scrolling.
