PlayStation PSP 3 Concept Imagines Sony’s Next Handheld With Up to 7 Hours of Battery Life

Sony’s rumored next-generation PlayStation handheld could bring native PS5 gaming to a form factor inspired by the original PSP. Although the final hardware remains under development, a new concept image imagines the so-called PSP 3 as a sleek portable console built around a large edge-to-edge display and familiar PlayStation controls.

The concept adopts an elongated silver body with heavily rounded ends, recalling both the PSP and PlayStation Vita. Its symmetrical analog sticks sit beneath the D-pad and PlayStation face buttons, while small speaker grilles and two pill-shaped controls occupy the lower corners. Thin screen bezels help modernize the silhouette, though the body appears substantial enough to accommodate active cooling and a reasonably large battery.

According to the latest technical rumors, the real Sony handheld could use a custom AMD processor codenamed Canis, manufactured on a 3nm process. Its baseline thermal design power is reportedly around 15W, putting it in the same general power class as portable gaming PCs such as the Steam Deck. Sony has not confirmed the chipset, specifications or PSP 3 branding.

Battery capacity also remains unknown, but current estimates point to between three and five hours of playtime in demanding PS5 games. Less intensive indie titles, optimized releases and older PS4-era games could extend that figure to approximately six or seven hours. Actual endurance would naturally depend on resolution, frame rate, screen brightness and wireless connectivity.

Sony’s reported Low-Power Mode may be central to achieving those figures. Developers would optimize supported PS5 games to maintain a target of 60 FPS by lowering the internal rendering resolution and disabling selected visual effects. If the reports prove accurate, Sony’s next handheld may prioritize intelligent optimization over brute force, delivering a slimmer device without relying on an oversized battery. A commercial release is not expected before 2027 or 2028.
