Designed by Om Rawaley, Pocketbyte isn’t trying to compete with smartphones or gaming handhelds. Instead, it embraces modularity, openness and intentional simplicity, creating a device that feels refreshingly honest.

Industrial design that prioritizes function over nostalgia

Pocketbyte immediately stands out because it doesn’t imitate retro consoles or vintage PDAs. Instead, it borrows familiar proportions while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

The most striking element is the two-piece modular architecture. Rather than integrating controls permanently into the chassis, the lower section is detachable through a magnetic pogo-pin connector. Users can instantly swap between a gaming controller and a compact QWERTY keyboard without rebooting or reconfiguring the system.

This modular approach fundamentally changes how the device is perceived. Instead of designing one product around multiple compromises, Pocketbyte becomes several specialized devices sharing the same computing core.

Equally impressive is how cleanly this separation has been executed. The connector remains nearly invisible, while the lower modules maintain the same footprint and thickness, preserving visual consistency regardless of which accessory is attached.

Transparency becomes part of the product identity

Perhaps the strongest industrial design statement is the transparent upper housing.

Rather than hiding the electronics, Pocketbyte proudly exposes its PCB beneath smoked translucent plastic. This isn’t merely decorative. It communicates exactly what the product represents: an open-source machine built for makers.

The transparent enclosure gives the handheld an engineering prototype aesthetic that feels deliberate instead of unfinished. Combined with the matte white aluminium-like rear shell, rounded corners and exposed screws, the device successfully balances consumer friendliness with hacker culture.

Unlike many transparent gadgets chasing nostalgia, Pocketbyte uses transparency as an expression of openness rather than retro styling.

Small details reveal careful engineering

Pocketbyte’s proportions appear deceptively simple.

The nearly square 2.8-inch display dominates the front surface, leaving just enough room for comfortable bezels while maximizing usable screen area. The chassis remains thick enough to feel substantial in hand but compact enough to disappear inside a pocket.

The rounded edges soften what would otherwise be an extremely geometric object, making long handheld sessions more comfortable.

Even the rear ventilation holes are arranged as a minimal grid instead of decorative styling flourishes, reinforcing the product’s engineering-first philosophy.

The magnetic connection between modules deserves particular praise. Rather than relying on clips or rails that eventually wear out, the pogo-pin system creates a satisfying mechanical interaction while encouraging experimentation with future expansion modules.

Built for creators as much as users

Pocketbyte’s industrial design perfectly complements its philosophy.

Inside sits an ESP32-S3 processor running at 240 MHz, paired with a sunlight-readable IPS display, a 1,500mAh battery, USB-C charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Software remains equally open. PocketbyteOS includes its own Wi-Fi-enabled app store, while developers can create applications using an Apache 2.0 licensed SDK. Thanks to its unlocked architecture, owners can also flash completely custom firmware.

Retro gaming is naturally part of the experience, with Retro-Go supporting systems including the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Game Boy Color, while music playback, note-taking and lightweight productivity complete the PDA-inspired feature set.

A refreshing alternative to smartphone maximalism

Pocketbyte arrives at an interesting moment in consumer electronics. As smartphones become increasingly powerful—and increasingly distracting—there is growing appreciation for dedicated devices designed around specific tasks.
