Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Ultra line is poised for a notable visual refresh in 2026. After years of sporting clean, minimalist backs with standalone camera lenses, the Galaxy S26 Ultra may break that tradition. According to respected leaker Ice Universe, the Ultra could get a raised, oval-shaped camera island housing three out of four rear cameras. While the leak is based on fan renders and speculation, it aligns with growing chatter about design and hardware shifts in Samsung’s upcoming Ultra.
Raised Cameras for Bigger Sensors
Since the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung has avoided bulky camera modules, opting instead to embed each lens individually into the phone’s glass back. But with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, that philosophy might change—mostly out of necessity. Rumors suggest the main and 5x periscope telephoto cameras will come with larger apertures and bigger sensors, requiring more physical space. And since the S26 Ultra is also expected to be thinner than the S25 Ultra, Samsung faces a design challenge: how to accommodate bigger optics without creating a messy or awkward bump layout.
The likely solution? A slim camera island. The new design would slightly elevate the three primary cameras—main, ultrawide, and periscope—on a soft oval base, giving them space to breathe while maintaining a sleeker silhouette. Visually, the bump could also create a more cohesive layout, in contrast to the “floating lens” aesthetic of the last few Ultras.
Inspired by Foldables and Mid-Range Models
Interestingly, the design shares visual DNA with the Galaxy Z Fold7, which retained its camera bump in 2025. There are also echoes of Samsung’s more experimental mid-range models. The curved module doesn’t stray too far from Samsung’s existing design language—it just retools it for Ultra-grade performance. That might upset purists who associate “Ultra” with a cleaner design ethos, but the practicality may win over those who value better image quality.
Fan renders circulating on X (formerly Twitter) are not official leaks but are informed interpretations based on sensor size rumors, the shift in aperture specs, and Samsung’s evolving design philosophy. Ice Universe himself said there’s a “pretty high chance” the real phone will resemble these concepts.
Familiar Core, New Skin
Aside from the camera redesign, the rest of the Galaxy S26 Ultra appears largely unchanged—at least externally. Under the hood, Samsung is expected to equip it with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “Elite 2” for Galaxy and possibly increase wired charging to 65W, a welcome bump from the current 45W. The battery is likely to stay at 5,000mAh, maintaining Samsung’s balance between power and form factor.
The new HP2+ camera sensor could also debut on the S26 Ultra, bringing in larger pixels and better low-light performance—another justification for the raised module.
A Smart Evolution or Step Back?
Whether this redesign is a much-needed refresh or a visual regression will depend on execution. The standalone lens design was beginning to feel dated for some users, but others appreciated its clean look. Samsung appears to be threading the needle: evolving the Ultra’s hardware while taking cues from its premium foldables and mid-rangers.
