Samsung may be preparing one of its strangest and most futuristic Galaxy devices yet. Fresh patent sketches discovered in collaboration with xleaks7 and WearView reveal a possible Galaxy Z Rollable phone, complete with a sideways-expanding display and a moving rear camera module that physically slides together with the body of the device.
Unlike current foldables that simply open like a book, this concept takes a different route. The screen appears to roll outward horizontally, transforming a normal-looking smartphone into something much closer to a compact tablet. And honestly, the weirdest part is not even the display. It’s the camera island.
Based on the patent drawings, the camera module sits on a movable section of the chassis. When the phone is closed, that section locks neatly into a dedicated slot in the frame, keeping the back clean and symmetrical. Once the display expands, the rear portion slides outward together with the panel, dragging the camera system along with it.
It almost looks like Samsung wants the hardware itself to become part of the animation. That could make the Galaxy Z Rollable instantly recognizable in videos or hands-on demos, especially in a market where many foldables are starting to feel visually identical.
The compact form resembles a standard Galaxy smartphone, with slim bezels and a centered selfie camera. But once extended, the device becomes dramatically wider. Think less Galaxy Z Fold and more “phone turning into sci-fi tablet in real time.”
According to the patent documentation, Samsung describes an electronic device featuring a flexible display, movable housing, camera module, sensors, antenna systems and internal positioning logic that adapts while the chassis changes size.
That last part matters more than it sounds. A rollable phone with moving hardware introduces a completely different level of complexity compared to traditional foldables. Samsung would need the cameras, sensors and software to constantly understand the device’s changing geometry. That could affect everything from image stabilization and AR tracking to antenna placement and thermal management.
And yes, durability immediately becomes the giant elephant in the room.
Foldables already have a reputation for being mechanically complex. Now imagine adding moving camera hardware into the equation. More rails, more moving pieces, more chances for dust or wear over time. Samsung clearly believes the idea is possible, but patents do not always become real products.
Still, this concept does not appear out of nowhere. Samsung Display has spent years teasing slidable and rollable OLED technologies at trade shows. One of the more recent concepts, called Slidable Flex Duet, could reportedly expand from 8.1 inches to 12.4 inches. So the company is clearly experimenting with form factors beyond today’s foldables.
Rumors about a future Galaxy Z Roll or Galaxy Z Rollable have also circulated before, although Samsung has not officially confirmed any commercial launch plans yet.
