The Future Viability of Tri-Fold Phones as Work Machines

Regular folding phones have existed since the late 2010s. Made most famous by Samsung’s Galaxy Z series, these are now entering their seventh generation, with market share still growing by the year. As much promise as these devices have been advertised to offer, they’ve yet to achieve real success on the productivity or business fronts. Enter tri-folds, the next step forward which could truly bridge the gap between traditional mobile and more complex business computers, at least in theory.

Size Sets a Standard

The tri-fold nature of the smartphone provides its most obvious feature: a screen size three times that of a traditional slate-style phone. This feature alone isn’t what makes tri-fold valuable for work applications; however, it’s more of a minimum standard that mobile devices require before becoming viable productivity systems.

Acting as the second big advantage here is how any personal device can be much more helpful for keeping personal and professional data safe and accessible. With a phone, you can carry permanent access to key business data locked behind powerful and near-unbreakable passwords and identity checks. A work desktop can’t offer this convenience, and even a work laptop can be too bulky to become an easy carry.

Bridging the Gap

A screen three times the regular size opens the door to many applications, but stepping through requires the use of additional specialised hardware and software. The first of these is a hardware dock into which a folding phone can be placed. These have already been explored with platforms like the DeX, but tri-folds could take this idea further.

With a traditional smartphone dock, you still need a screen, a mouse, and a keyboard. With a tri-fold device, the additional screen wouldn’t be necessary thanks to the system’s larger size. Foldable keyboards with trackpads could avoid the other issues entirely, providing a smaller-profile work device than anything previously possible. From this point, you could manage emails, databases, and even more specialised work tools directly from a tri-fold.

Consider how managing business operations today from modern desktop and laptop devices is achieved, such as working through iGaming infrastructure support tools. Whether managing wider iGaming platforms or specifically looking at games and studios through a casino aggregator system, a keyboard, screen, and mouse cursor movement tool are all that’s needed. The same applies to modifying frontend code or exploring scalability options. Each of these could, in theory at least, be handled by the next generations of tri-folds combined with better dock support, or just a foldable keyboard.

A Questionable Future

As tri-fold technology currently exists, only two real challenges stand in the way of more widespread implementation. The first is operating system support. Most business apps are built specifically for one operating system, and don’t play nice with smartphones. Windows is the most common business use case here, and as of yet, there is no Windows tri-fold phone on the market. Unless software becomes more flexible, or OS emulation tools improve, a lack of support here will be a roadblock.

The final big question is that of cost. Tri-folds are already more expensive than traditional models, and with the recent explosion in storage and RAM costs, tri-folds are expected to become even less affordable. Unfortunately, only time and market stabilisation are real solutions for these issues, with industry experts seeing no end on the horizon.

Make no mistake, tri-fold phones as powerful work systems are more a matter of when, and not if. They won’t be a perfect fit for everyone, but they offer enough potential to completely reshape the mobile business environment for some. It might take until the 2030s, but it’s an avenue worth watching closely for anyone looking for a more convenient method of remote work going forward.
