Industrial Design Rooted in Research
KARRI partnered with Pentagram’s industrial design team to create a second-generation product with mass-market appeal. The design process began with interviews of families and children to uncover frustrations with typical kid-tech. The core insight? Kids needed one simple, tactile interaction model. The result is the “slide to talk” button—a single mechanical control that handles recording, sending, listening, and deleting messages with intuitive gestures. This approach recalls the physicality of a walkie-talkie, but reimagined for modern connectivity.
Nostalgic Yet Modern Aesthetic
Visually, the KARRI messenger avoids the shiny excess of smartphones. Instead, it uses silicone bumpers, soft pastel tones, and playful accents, making the device look approachable and safe while durable enough for everyday knocks. The inclusion of a lanyard reinforces its role as a wearable object, blending utility with an accessory-like charm. The LED matrix display is minimal—enough to show names or basic information without morphing into a distraction screen. By forgoing apps, feeds, and notifications, the design channels digital-wellness principles into an object that feels both retro and fresh.
Built for Safety and Simplicity
Industrial design choices extend beyond aesthetics. A built-in flashlight doubles the device’s function, turning it into a bedtime comfort tool or a pocket torch for outdoor adventures. Large, clearly defined buttons ensure haptic clarity—kids can operate the device without second-guessing. Meanwhile, the parental app manages the invisible layers of the system: battery checks, network monitoring, and location tracking. The separation of roles is deliberate: children get an empowering, screen-free tool, while parents remain in control of the ecosystem.
