Samsung’s triple-foldable might ditch the “Z” fold for a safer book-like design

A fresh batch of leaked sketches and animations has given us our clearest look yet at Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone — and fans are already dissecting every detail. While Huawei has already shipped one (and is working on a second), Samsung’s design seems to take a different approach, prioritizing screen protection over slimness.

The biggest difference? No exposed panel when the device is closed. Unlike Huawei’s Mate XT, which folds into a Z-shape and leaves one display always vulnerable, Samsung’s concept folds everything inward, more like a sealed letter. The left panel folds onto the middle one, and both tuck neatly over the right side. That means the main flexible display stays hidden from coins, keys, and scratches when the phone is in your pocket.

Animations posted by TechHighest also point to some interesting engineering decisions. The Galaxy Z TriFold will reportedly include a dedicated wireless charging coil and NFC components, raising the question of how Samsung will balance power delivery and antenna performance across three separate panels.

There’s precedent here: at MWC 2025, Samsung showed off its “Flex G” demo, a tri-folding prototype that seems to have inspired this final design. But going fully inward-folding comes with a tradeoff — since no screen is left visible, Samsung will likely need to add an extra external display. That would make the device bulkier, but also far more resilient than Huawei’s approach.

If this leak holds up, Samsung’s TriFold may be less about showing off futuristic flex tricks and more about solving a practical problem: how to keep a giant tablet-sized display safe in the real world.
