Apple may ditch black again as iPhone 18 Pro tests a deep, moody red

iPhone 18 Pro might be heading into its most visually distinct era yet — not because of a new material or form factor, but because of color. According to a fresh round of leaks, Apple is testing a deep red finish for the next Pro lineup, while continuing a decision that already raised eyebrows last year: no black option.

The detail comes from Mark Gurman, who describes the new shade as closer to a rich burgundy than anything resembling the bright PRODUCT(RED) tones Apple used in the past. That distinction matters. This isn’t about reviving a familiar color — it’s about reframing what a “Pro” iPhone is supposed to look like. Less safe, more expressive, but still trying to feel expensive.

If it ships, this would mark the first time Apple brings any kind of red to the Pro tier. Historically, that palette was reserved for the standard models, while the Pro line stuck to controlled, almost conservative finishes — graphite, silver, gold, and more recently, muted titanium shades. Deep red breaks that pattern in a way that feels intentional, not experimental.

At the same time, black is reportedly staying out of the picture for a second year in a row. After the iPhone 17 Pro quietly removed it — a first for the lineup — Apple doesn’t seem interested in walking that decision back. Instead, it’s doubling down on a new color philosophy where the Pro models lean into bolder identities rather than default choices.

There’s also a broader product strategy starting to take shape. While the Pro line gets more visually daring, Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone is said to stick with safer finishes like space gray and silver. In other words, Apple may be splitting its lineup not just by features, but by personality: expressive versus restrained.

Earlier rumors pointed to purple and brown variants for the iPhone 18 Pro, but those now appear to have been iterations of the same red direction rather than separate options. That narrows the narrative considerably. Instead of a wide palette, Apple could be focusing on a single standout finish — one that defines the generation at a glance.

The expected launch window is September 2026, which leaves plenty of time for Apple to tweak or scrap color options entirely.
