Sony Xperia 1 VIII leaks again — squared camera island and subtle front rethink

A fresh batch of CAD renders for the Sony Xperia 1 VIII reinforces what earlier case molds already suggested: this is a deliberate design shift. The device is wider and the camera design feels like Motorola Signature.

The square camera area is here to replace the classic Xperia strip. It houses three sensors and a flash in a tighter, more centralized footprint. The layout looks engineered for balance rather than identity, trading Sony’s traditional asymmetry for something more aligned with industry geometry. It feels a lot like a Motorola Signature.

There’s also a noticeable shift in how the camera hardware is framed. The lenses appear larger, more pronounced, with a clear separation between modules — especially the periscope-style telephoto, which sits slightly offset within the island. This hints at internal changes rather than just aesthetic ones. Rumors point to a refreshed triple 48MP system, where the ultrawide remains consistent with the previous generation, but the main sensor grows in size and the telephoto moves into a larger 1/3″–1/2″ class. In practical terms, that suggests better light capture and potentially more stable zoom performance, especially in low-light scenarios.

The renders also show a flat display with symmetrical bezels and a centrally placed front-facing camera embedded in the top frame, not a punch-hole cutout as previously leaked. Stereo speakers remain, flanking the display in classic Xperia fashion. This detail matters because it confirms Sony isn’t abandoning its multimedia-first DNA. While others chase screen-to-body ratios at all costs, Sony seems to be preserving functional elements that directly impact audio and content consumption.

The side profile stays sharp and angular, with flat edges that emphasize grip and precision. The device looks dense rather than thin, suggesting internal priorities like camera hardware and battery capacity are still taking precedence over ultra-slim aesthetics. Color options, at least in these renders, lean toward muted tones — black, deep purple, and a desaturated green — reinforcing the industrial design language Sony has been refining in recent years.

What makes this leak cycle interesting is consistency. Multiple sources are now pointing to the same design decisions: square camera island, larger sensors, traditional front layout. At this point, even if minor details shift before launch, the overall direction seems locked.
