The year started pretty nicely, with the Oppo X 2021 rollable phone and we kept hearing that Samsung, TCL and the likes were about to launch similar devices. That hasn’t come through yet and it’s all just in concept phase. The latest such concept is the Huawei Mate Rollable Phone, coming from Ts Designer via Letsgodigital.
Letsgodigital has reported on Huawei innovation a bunch of times over the past month. They’ve shown a rounded display device, a unit with an under display camera and a Huawei smartphone with variable camera aperture. The company also seems to be working on a rollable phone with a pull out screen. Graphic designer Ts Designer has made a series of renders, based on the Huawei patents that popped up recently.
When rolled up, the device has a screen that takes up the entire front side and also a part of the back. When the screen is pulled out, the screen surface on the back is expanded into the front. When opened up the screen enlarges by about 35%. There;s also a third position that makes the device a tablet, with 70% larger screen estate. This way you can take a smartphone with a 6.5 inch diagonal and turn it into a behemoth with an 11 inch panel.
The selfie camera is hidden under the screen apparently. When closed up, the Mate Rollable Phone actually feels like a Huawei Mate X or Mate Xs. Patents mention magnets as the way to ensure that the screen is held tightly against the housing. I have a feeling that rollables will be big in 2022, if not 2023.
