Sony’s smartphone design language has long been defined by minimalism, sharp edges, and an almost stubborn resistance to change. For years, Xperia devices have been nearly indistinguishable across generations, with their tall aspect ratios and vertical camera stacks. But if the latest case leaks are accurate, the upcoming Xperia 10 VII is about to break that cycle—at least slightly.
Leaked images from an Amazon case listing suggest that Sony is rethinking the camera layout on its next mid-ranger. Instead of the familiar vertical alignment seen on the Xperia 10 VI, the Xperia 10 VII appears to adopt a horizontal camera module, housing its dual sensors side by side. While it may seem like a subtle tweak, in Sony’s world of near-identical iterations, this is a noteworthy shift.
The last time Sony experimented with a horizontal camera island on a mid-range Xperia was back in 2019 with the original Xperia 10. Since then, the brand has doubled down on its slim, vertical aesthetic. Reintroducing a horizontal setup may not only improve ergonomics when holding the phone in landscape mode for photography, but also gives the back panel a more balanced visual identity. The wide pill-shaped camera housing also recalls Sony’s design roots, blending functionality with understated geometry.
Beyond the camera repositioning, the overall Xperia 10 VII design remains faithful to Sony’s philosophy: flat edges, elongated 21:9 display, and a clean, no-nonsense back. The protective case images also highlight reinforced corners, suggesting that accessory makers anticipate buyers using this phone in everyday, rugged conditions.
What’s most interesting is the timing. The Xperia 10 VI launched back in June 2024, and the VII’s delayed leak cycle may indicate Sony is preparing a later reveal this year.
