Shaik Imaduddin sent me an email detailing his ideas regarding the way that Windows Phone 8 will look like. The OS is shown on a new concept phone, the Microsoft xPhone, that runs WP8. This handset comes with a 4.7 inch display, a dual core 1.6 GHz processor and a Kinect sensor built in, so that the phone can be used with gestures instead of touch. I have to remind you that WP8 is also codenamed Apollo, in cas you’ve heard about it.

As you can see the idea of Windows Phone 8 is a horizontally scrolling interface that now divides the purposes of the phone between entertainment and productivity. There’s a Start area at the top and a Live area at the bottom, that includes tweets, weather and other stuff happening in real time. This sort of horizontal UI is used in the Zune area of Windows Phone and also in the Windows Phone Marketpace, so why not expand the concept to the entire operating system?

It always felt a bit limited to only swipe to the right and reach the apps list and that’s it. Maybe now with big tiles instead of those tiny little apps in that huge vertical list we’ll get things going. However, that would mean a lot of scrolling to the right and left…

Good work! Tho Helvetica font doesnt work and reminds too much about iOS. Segoe WP works perfectly with your design ;)

Good ideas in this concept, but still people go to old stuff like shadows under tiles, gradients, here, gradients there… that’s not gonna happen :) Microsoft goes back where no fancy stuff is needed, like aero style or gloss, glitter, shadows. Or do you see anywhere in Windows 8 shadows? or in WP7? or even gloss? or gradients? sorry but the style is not gonna happen. but he idea of panning to the side is good in some way
