There was a time when a so called “tradition” was in place: each big phone maker launched a concept phone that would never make it on the market. Huawei had Honor Magic, OnePlus recently had the Concept Phone, the Mi Mix Alpha is also an example, plus the Vivo APEX models. Now comes the Vivo APEX 2020, courtesy of designer Ben Geskin.

We did have a Vivo APEX concept back in 2018, followed by an upgraded version in 2019 and we’ll probably also get one in 2020. The front side is all screen, with no visible bezels, but somehow there’s room for an earpiece. I would have integrated it in the screen, but that’s just me. I don’t see any selfie camera, so it’s probably hidden under the screen glass, since pop up cams are so yesterday. Oppo, Vivo’s sister company has been flirting with this technology for a while now.

At the back there’s clearly a periscope zoom camera trapped in an Oreo shaped camera module. Ben Geskin claims the APEX 2020 will come with a 5-7.5X optical zoom and a 48 MP gimbal camera. The rear camera has just two sensors: optical zoom one and 48 MP main shooter. There’s no ultra wide cam this time or even a LED flash, weirdly enough. Have we gone so far with AI post processing that we can turn night into day sans flash? There’s 5G connectivity and probably the latest Snapdragon CPU on board.

There’s also no opening here and the device will use a fully wireless fast charging method and virtual buttons. Vivo obviously won’t produce the device, but it will serve as proof of concept for future models. We may also end up with a Vivo NEX 4 or something like it. Lack of buttons and selfie cameras under the screen sound like two trends to watch in 2020 and beyond.
