Huawei skips Mate X7, goes straight to Mate X8; 20GB RAM and redesigned camera Leak

Huawei seems to be skipping another number in its lineup—this time jumping directly from Mate X6 to Mate X8, completely bypassing the Mate X7. Early leaks point to some major upgrades, including a whopping 20GB of RAM and a brand-new camera design. It’s not the first time Huawei pulls this move—remember how we went from Mate X3 straight to X5? Yeah, same playbook here.

Accessory makers have already started prepping cases and screen protectors labeled “Mate X8,” adding weight to the rumors that the X7 doesn’t exist. The standout upgrade, though, is the rumored bump to 20GB of RAM, up from 16GB on the Mate X6. That’s a huge leap, especially for a foldable, clearly targeting power users and those running advanced AI tasks locally on-device.

Under the hood, the Mate X8 is expected to be powered by the upcoming Kirin 9030 chipset—a natural successor to the Kirin 9020 found in the Mate X6. This configuration may also appear in the upcoming Mate 80 series, indicating Huawei is betting big on this combo. If true, the X8 could become one of the most powerful foldables on the market in terms of raw performance and memory.

Jumping from 16GB to 20GB RAM in a foldable signals Huawei’s intent to compete hard in the high-performance mobile space. While other foldables are mostly focused on refinements and form factors, Huawei looks ready to push the limits a bit.

Perhaps the most visible change is in the design—especially around the camera module. Leaker Fixed Focus Digital shared a few concept sketches showing a redesigned camera housing. While it’s unclear which sketch is closest to the final version, all of them hint at a noticeable shift from the Mate X6’s layout. The design ranges from circular to octagonal shapes, suggesting Huawei might be aiming for something more striking and distinctive.

Although there are no confirmed camera specs yet, such a design overhaul could also mean new sensors or optics. Huawei has a track record of solid camera systems, so a visual redesign might go hand-in-hand with a technical upgrade as well.
