The first time I saw a rollable phone concept it was in March 2021 and it was the OPPO X 2021, but I haven’t seen one since, at least not with my own eyes. In the meantime a few concepts and prototypes have appeared here and there and today we get a new one, courtesy of Motorola. Let’s check out the Motorola rollable phone concept below.
Showcased at Lenovo Tech World 2022, the device is the creation of Lenovo and Motorola together. The demo was done by Luca Rossi, Lenovo Group SVP, who showcased a rollable concept phone, able to expand vertically from a 5 inch machine to a 6.5 inch tall display unit. It does that via a physical button on the side. It’s interesting to see Motorola doing that in a vertical format, instead of the usual horizontal one, but we’ve seen this in hints and leaks, to be honest.
The content on the rollable smartphone will dynamically adjust to expand the screen while watching videos. Lenovo will also keep working on potential use cases. The rollable phone is a proof of concept at its current stage, but with all the hints and teasers we have I’m pretty sure Moto is going to debut a real device of this sort pretty soon. Lenovo is also working on a rollable laptop, that surprisingly also has a vertically expanding screen for improved multitasking, browsing and other uses.
Sadly none of these have deadlines and unveiling time frames, but my guess is that we’ll get legit products around the time of CES 2022. Honestly, I have to first see the sketch of such a phone before I start believing in the format.
