Samsung’s foldable ambitions may be getting even broader. According to a report from SammyGuru, the company recently ran a consumer survey that included conceptual renders of a new wide foldable phone. While Samsung didn’t confirm any specifications or timelines, the images hint at a design that breaks away from the tall-and-narrow Galaxy Z Fold formula.
The renders show what’s best described as a “passport-style” foldable. When closed, the device looks wider and more phone-like than the current Z Fold series. When opened, it transforms into a nearly square display, a form factor that prioritizes usability over dramatic vertical real estate. Think less elongated tablet, more compact digital notebook.
Visually, the concept bears some resemblance to the original Google Pixel Fold, though with slimmer bezels and a cleaner overall silhouette. SammyGuru also likens it to Microsoft’s Surface Duo, but with a key difference: this time, it’s a single, continuous folding display rather than two separate panels joined by a hinge.
According to existing rumors, the device could feature an 18:9 aspect ratio on the cover screen and expand to an 18:18 aspect ratio when unfolded. That would make it fundamentally different from Samsung’s current Fold lineup, which still feels like a tall smartphone that happens to open into a tablet. A wider cover display would also solve one of the most common complaints about the Galaxy Z Fold: that the outer screen feels cramped for everyday use.
Importantly, this survey doesn’t guarantee a final product. Samsung has a long history of testing radical ideas internally and with consumers before deciding what makes it to market. Still, the timing is notable. Korean media has previously reported that Samsung is aiming to introduce a wide-opening foldable in 2026, potentially as a strategic response to Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone.
If that’s the case, this wide foldable would neatly round out Samsung’s portfolio. The company already covers the clamshell format with the Galaxy Z Flip, the book-style foldable with the Z Fold, and experimental territory with the recently launched TriFold. A wider Fold-style device would fill the gap between phone-first and tablet-first designs.
