Samsung has secured a new patent for a tri-folding flip-style device, potentially signaling a major advancement in foldable smartphone technology. The patent, spotted by 91mobiles and granted on February 25 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), showcases a device that folds twice using two hinges, creating a compact yet expansive display when unfolded.
The tri-folding design resembles a flip-style foldable phone when closed but expands into a much larger screen area when opened. Notably, the patent images suggest the device includes an S Pen slot, hinting at possible tablet-like functionality or a high-end S-series Ultra smartphone with stylus support.
Key design elements include a volume rocker and power button on the upper portion of the device, while the USB Type-C port sits at the bottom. Additionally, an elongated oval module on the rear could house camera sensors.
While it remains unclear whether Samsung plans to commercialize this specific design, the patent underscores the company’s continued investment in tri-foldable technology. Reports suggest Samsung is already working on its first tri-folding smartphone, the Galaxy G Fold, which is expected to compete with Huawei’s Mate XT.
The Galaxy G Fold is rumored to feature a 9.96-inch unfolded display—significantly larger than the 7.6-inch internal screen of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6. When folded, it may offer a 6.54-inch display. In contrast, the Huawei Mate XT boasts a 10.2-inch unfolded screen. The inward folding mechanism of Samsung’s design could contribute to a slightly thicker build.
Speculation suggests Samsung may unveil its tri-foldable alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 later this year. However, as this newly patented design is still in the early stages, there’s no confirmation yet on whether it will make it to the market.
With Samsung leading the charge in foldable innovation, the tri-folding concept could represent the next step in the evolution of smartphones and tablets.
