Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Gets an Extra 1 Inch Sensor, Interchangeable Leica Lens

Xiaomi already impressed everyone by claiming to launch the first 1 inch camera sensor phone, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Now they’re increasing the stakes, as they’re debuting an accessory for the device, an extra interchangeable Leica lens.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra was introduced back in July, with a 1 inch Sony IMX989 sensor and Leica optics. Xiaomi itself said before the phone was launched that it had two prototypes in the making, one resembling a phone and another one that could receive an attachment. Said attachment is a 1 inch 50 MP Sony IMX989 sensor, with support for a professional Leica M series lens.

That’s a bit overkill if you ask me, since adding a huge lens to a phone would make it very hard to use and hold, but if you care about optics, it would improve the experience dramatically. There’s still a 48 megapixel ultrawide camera that has been moved to the side, compared to the centered position on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

This concept phone or better said phone prototype will remain unlaunched and it’s able to attach several replacement lenses, with a variety of focal lengths and apertures. It should bring an impressive improvement in imagine capabilities. Also, instead of using its own lens, it captures the light via the external lens. The secondary sensor reduces the quantity of light loss, being installed right at the center of the image field and allowing users to capture the sharpest image.

There are also some reinforced parts in order to support the weight of the lens mount, which can be mechanically attached to the frame. Sapphire glass protection is also here and the lens attachment happens via a simple twist and click, just like an M-mount camera.

Even the software has been tweaked, so we’re getting focus peaking, grid, histogram and more, even 10 bit RAW capture.
