ModeLabs is a French design team that showed the world some very interesting
eco-friendly concept phones, back in 2006. The three handsets use the energy generated by the phone owner’s movements, in order to recharge. The first of the concept devices is YoYo (below), that can be worn around the neck and is fueled by swinging and bouncing, plus a solar power cell.

The other two cellphones are U-Turn, the fascinating green device below, a business phone that is recharged by simply opening and closing the keyboard. The last device is Runaway, a sports phone that will (predictably enough) get fueled by the user’s exercise.
3 years have passed since these concepts surfaced, but they’re still original and interesting and still haven’t reached the shops, so we’ll wait some more.

Want a mobile phone that never goes obsolete? Well then check out the Infinite Sustainable Mobile Phone, a concept created by designer Will Orrock, that relies on two main ideas: layers and upgrade. Infinite uses 4 basic layers: the battery, the
OLED screen wrap, the high strength polymer case and a printed circuit board.

The concept device will be powered by an ORB (Organic Radical Battery), that’s eco-friendly and fast-charging (30 seconds to 2 minutes) and also makes the phone slim. According to Orrock, the OLED screen is backed up by a tungsten layer and the display covers most of the handset, in order to keep it cool and feed us with information.
Of course, nature makes its appearance once again, as each layer of the device can be broken down and recycled/upgraded separately.

Infinite Phone’s specs are not to be neglected, because they include a 360 degree screen, a magnetic dock connection, a 8.1 megapixel camera and 32 GB of internal memory. There’s also a haptic touchscreen on board, Bluetooth headphones and sync and charge functions.
All of these features will be upgradeable, so the phone will be cool even in 2020, when you’ll probably buy a 30 megapixel camera module and 320 GB of memory for it.

It’s been quite a while since we saw an
eco-friendly phone in here, so a new addition is welcome, specially an original handset like this. Je-Hyun Kim designed the Natural Year Phone, that’s made out of hay and other biodegradable materials, of course, not including the screen and soft keys.
These will get recycled, while the biodegradable materials will “become one with Mother Nature”, as you can see in the pic below.

As far as I know, sustainable cellphones are made out of recyclable materials or have something to do with
saving the nature… Following the “green” trend, Jason Meyer designed the Tribe phone, one of these sustainable devices, with a very interesting keypad and design lines that have something animalic and natural about them.
I see a snake and wood… What do you see?

Let me say this right from the start… If there’s a
concept phone that must be left in the sun all day so it’ll be charged with solar energy, won’t it become incredibly hot because it’s black? Criticism aside, we love the design of the Solar concept phone, typical candybar, but the back side is the really fascinating part.

There’s a removable back cover which seems to include mini solar panels and it can be changed with another similar unit, for longer battery life. Designed by Warin Thanathawee, from Bangkok, Thailand, the Solar Phone can be used in the direct sunlight for an extra energy boost, in case the battery is dying.

After seeing
Nokia’s Tube in action and getting a glimpse of the future
Touch Communicator, it’s time for the camera to flash, as we check out an 8 megapixel cameraphone. Yes, the device is branded Nokia, but the details are extremely scarce… The handset looks more like a camera than a phone to me, but it’s equally hot.

Turns out that it features Bluetooth, Symbian S60, a speaker and tons of eco-friendliness. This concept phone is made of wood from sustainable forests, so Mother Nature won’t suffer as you take your pics with the aid of the handset.

Sony Ericsson recently announced the launch of its environmentally friendly handset, the GreenHeart concept phone. The device has a pretty decent life cycle and features a bio-plastic housing, recycled plastic keypad, zero charger (3.5mW standby power) and HTML based e-manuals (no more cut down trees for paper).

Plus, the GreenHeart comes with “Ecomate”, an educational app that’s pretty much a fun game. Even the package of the phone is environmentally friendly so owning, using and recycling the handset will solve some of Mother Nature’s issues.

Meet FuChat, the cordless phone designed by D-Link, that can make normal calls and Internet ones if needed. It’s an eco-friendly device, made out of biodegradable plastic plus corn starch, sugarcane and some light aluminium. The phone can “sense” the user’s emotions and act accordingly, as you’ll find out if you keep on reading.

If the handset senses a change of tone or body temperature, it will react to the user’s emotions displaying texts, changing its display, playing sounds and even changing color. Sounds like a good way to work out some anger management or “read the mind” of business partners using the device in front of you.

Plus, if you’re really really busy and want to inform everyone about it, you can use the FuChat phone as a “Do not disturb” sign and hang it on the door-handle. The back of the device displays, aside from the emotional info, weather images, the time and the above-mentioned sign. FuChat also comes with a wall-mounted base station that can also show you the weather, temperature, time and caller ID.

Face it, we’re living in an eco-trendy era! No longer we see stars getting criticized by environmental organisations, as they donate everything they have to them, drive hybrid cars, use ecological phones and gadgets and become vegetarians. Well, here’s a phone for those people, the
Vertu Essence, an eco-friendly device of 2015.

Vertu Essence was created by Wen-Sheng Hong and it comes with a toughened ceramic and titanium case plus a sapphire crystal screen that will probably last forever. Notice that cool farmed bamboo exterior granting the phone the eco-look plus the option of switching parts of the handset in the following years, as the technology evolves.

The Eclipse Intuit handset below reminds me of the concept phone with
incorporated Bluetooth headset, that resembled the Sony PSP. This time, we’re treated with a better-than-average device, with a 5 megapixel camera, photo editing software, slide out touch keyboard (with tactile feedback) and a decent touchscreen.

Eclipse Intuit was designed by Eddie Goh and it uses a thin solar layer that charges using solar energy and not only that, relying on each and every source of light to keep the battery going. Apple had a similar concept, showing up on the Web a couple of weeks ago, so the solar phone is pretty doable, if you ask me.
