Xiaomi Mi Mix 5 Ultra Has Crazy 200X Optical Zoom, Retractable Lens

Earlier this month, Xiaomi unveiled a brand new retractable phone camera lens, that may take handset cameras to a whole new level. It’s retractable and able to capture up to 300% more light. The idea feels like the one of a professional camera, that’s able to expand its optical setup to achieve a larger aperture and capture extra light. That’s now also achieved on mobile, via the Xiaomi Mi Mix 5 Ultra concept, shown below.

The creation of Techconfigurations, Xiaomi Mi Mix 5 Ultra achieves a crazy 200X optical zoom. The device has an edge to edge immersive screen, with no visible notch or punch hole. The 40 megapixel selfie camera is hidden under the screen and revealed only when you need it. The camera module feels like the Mate 40 Pro one, but flatter. The center part is actually the 200X optical zoom camera, which expands or retracts according to your needs. It can make the camera quite big and thick, but the mechanism will become compact again, once you don’t need the zoom anymore.

Specs are hardcore:

  • 6.9 inch display, 120 Hz, HDR10, OLED
  • Snapdragon 875 processor
  • 12/16 GB LPDDR5 RAM
  • 128, 256, 512 GB storage
  • 5300 mAh battery, 120W fast charging
  • 5G

It sure sounds like a Galaxy S21 Killer, but perhaps with an overkill zoom. We’re just at 10x optical zoom right now and I think we’re on the cusp of 12 or 15X optical zoom. 200X sounds like an obscene amount of zoom power on a mere smartphone. I’d take non optical 200X for starters. Canon and Nikon barely deliver that on top level cameras and even that’s not achievable. Nikon Coolpix P1000 has 125x optical zoom for example. I think we’re many years away from such an achievement on a phone.
