Browsing through the archive of the
Esato board concepts, I’ve stumbled upon two hot PSP Phone designs that impressed me. They have quite a lot in common, starting from the color and the fact that they include touchscreen displays.
The first concept belongs to Sealover and it’s a dual sliding device with a 3.2 megapixel camera. It features two analog joysticks and is quite the looker, as you can see for yourself:

The second PSP Phone, pictured below is the creation of pavlov’s_dog and reminds me of an XPERIA handset. This also seems to be a dual sliding device, with a touchscreen, simple interface and as far as I can see no analog joystick. Also the gaming keys are extremely small, but this is an old concept after all…

This concept phone, designed by Jamie Carlin should be used by kids, at least theoretically, for gaming and texting. We’re impressed by its pretty huge number of keys and quite strange screen placement. How will we engage in a gaming session with the aid of such a small display?

I can see its utility when it comes to texting, but gaming… hmm, maybe with an accelerometer. I think that Nintendo should come in and change a few minor details, that will surely turn the device into a hit.

Where do I sign to get one of these devices when it turns into a real one? Check out the Slick PMP Phone concept designed by Jorge. L Gonzalez, a tech wonder that really had me impressed. It has everything a gamer needs, the perfect keyboard for texting freaks, a huge touchscreen and a very attractive form factor.
It basically a hybrid between a PSP, a Sidekick and any HTC device that you can imagine.

The handset’s camera is placed at the center back part, so it won’t obstruct your fingers as you game on. Plus, you get to use the device’s shoulder buttons for camera control and gaming. Notice those joysticks? They pop up when you slide the moving part of the handset and they’re pretty big, even for a portable console.
Slick also includes a QWERTY keypad that may remind some of you of the famous Sidekick or the T-Mobile G1.

So, we’ve got easy texting and instant messaging, gaming functions and a hot curved design that offers a better feel in the user’s hand and next to his face. We can’t forget the incredible 4 inch touchcreen, with zoom in/out support and the multimedia functions that also make this phone a PMP (portable media player).
Last, but not least, the quality of the materials used to built Slick really impressed me: stainless steel, chrome (trim), aluminium (faceplate) and rubber (keypad).

Sony has apparently filed for a touchscreen PSP patent, or so the word goes round, but no official confirmation till now. We’re dealing with leaked info from the patent office, that mentions a “digital tactile pixels” system used in a phone, media player, web browsing/e-mail device and navigation system.

Sure sounds like a PSP Phone to me, but a touchscreen PSP is just as good.

Check out the following concept, one of the most complex console/phone designs I’ve ever seen. So, the PSP finally gets a touchscreen, a better interface, a healthy pack of apps and a QWERTY keypad. I don’t quite see myself texting quickly on that though.
And that display would better be shock resistant and tough… Other than that, the iWish is a piece of heaven I’d get my hands on, if it were real.

It’s been a while since the last
PSP phone concept, but the device below might as well be a candidate for that name, specially since it’s (supposedly) a Sony Ericsson handset. Meet The Street Hunter phone, designed by Remi Tod, who probably fancies chocolate bars as much as we do, since his device is based on components that look like such sweets.

The “chocolate bars” include the phone’s keys and they’ll switch position as you pass from the phone mode, to gaming console mode or MP3 player mode. The audio player is probably the most convincing of the three, while the console really made me curios. Is this worthy of a PSP Phone branding? We think it is.

This mystery concept phone I’ve spotted on Flickr was created by kichu overclocked and it seems to be an AMD handset. Athfone’s keypad is no news to me, neither is its form factor, but the video features seem to be pretty good. At least that’s what I can say by having a glance at the handset’s display.

AMD Athfone was created, according to its designer with the aid of Adobe Photoshop CS2, by using vectoring. That “Game on” motto might as well be the device’s purpose, but with such an input mechanism, who would play games on this handset?

If so many names in a headline got you confused, you should know that designer Gabriel Prero has the teens’ preferences all figured out in his concept design. The Firely Multi-fly is featured on Coroflot and promises to be an alternative for your Sidekick, RAZR,
PSP, iPod and Nintendo DS. It’s a concept phone that targets the youngsters, the so-called “tweens” who change phones every year or so.

Studies have shown that tweens give up their handsets in favour of others every 18 months, so Firely Multi-fly tries to solve this issue. It can even appeal to a child and it’s got parental controls, so it’s a fine alternative to the Heart Phone. This concept is also up for gaming sessions, as it resembles an old-school Game Boy, but puts on an entirely different game.
The list of features doesn’t end here, though, as the handset can use expandable accessories, just like the iPod’s gear and even cartridges for games and other functions. If you thought that the Modu phone was unique with all of its jackets, wait till you see this! Firely Multi-fly comes with a camera cartridge and interchangeable keypad, so it can morph into a console, iPod or cameraphone at any time.

After seeing dozens of
PSP Phone concepts, we finally stumbled upon a patent of the device, only to be surprised by how much it resembles the original iPhone patent. Sony’s patent application is called “Orientation based multiple mode mechanically vibrated touchscreen display“, which pretty much defines what you can see below.

We could be dealing with a special Sony Ericsson handset, featuring a touchscreen display, accelerometer (or some sort of orientation system) and haptics feedback. However, before comparing this device to the iPhone, we should be taking into account the fact that Sony filed this patent application on August 30, 2006, months before the launch of Apple’s device.
Does this look like a plausible PSP Phone to you? For me it spells “Nintendo DS” a bit, but that may be my usual copycat paranoia.
