We see tons of stylish concept phones each day, but the Op Art is a bit more than the average human can grasp. I’m not much of a poet or dreamer, so I don’t like this design, but Alessandra M. Enriconi put her best effort into creating a handset that’s unconventional and futuristic.

Don’t expect to find uber-features on the specs list of the Op Art phone, as it only comes with a basic touchscreen plus a microphone and speaker, each on a sliding side. There’s also a camera in the mix, but you can only guess where it’s hidden, as for the display of the handset it can change its appearance by showing op art images.

Pop Quiz! What is Op Art? As Wikipedia puts it, it’s “known as optical art, a genre of visual art, especially painting, that makes use of optical illusions. Op art is also known as geometric abstraction and hard-edge abstraction, although the preferred term for it is perceptual abstraction.”

The Basic Tab mobile phone design manages to achieve a new interpretation of the whole “iPhone thing”, copied over and over again by big handset manufacturers. Its designer, Jaren Goh focused more on looks, than on futuristic specs and he did a splendid job, so we might as well call this a
fashion device.

Just look at the wide black screen at the front of the Basic Tab phone, a tad more elegant than Apple’s approach. Notice that the display is placed on top of a metal part and it gets a bit of RAZR aggressiveness going on. In case you’re not convinced that this is really a fashion phone, you should check out the camera’s metallic tab at the back. Precious, just precious…

You can’t be following the
latest trends without dressing properly and without owning a hip cellphone. Trendy becomes extremely cool with the aid of the Benq-Siemens Cameo handset, that’s only a concept phone, but it comes with a brilliant idea. Cameo supports digital customisation and can even turn invisible, if you want it to.

This Benq-Siemens conceptul wonder, designed by Nils Siegel can change its appearance with the aid of a curved touch sensitive display, that’s wrapped around the device. Cameo manages to change its color by taking a photo and adapting to your current clothing style or mood. So, if you’ve got a purple dress and you’re in a purple room, you might not be able to see the phone, as it’ll turn purple, too.
Now, where can you find a purple room?

Does anyone want to reinvent the flip phone? Ravefolk, Motorolafans forums user claims that he does and shows the world his creation:
Motorola Motofashion X3, the start of a new series of fashion phones, as the designer claims. The Linux-based handset is a weird combination between original design and mid-range features, but its ergonomics are pretty bad for a
fashion phone…

Well, for starters, the screen is too small and the keypad is very uncomfortable to use, not to mention the whole flip phone mechanism that’s pretty much useless, since you can use 90% of the phone’s features right away, without flipping it open. Here’s the list of Motofashion X3’s features anyway:
- OLED high-def display, 262k colours, 220 x 768 pixels resolution
- 2.0 megapixel camera with macro, 8x zoom and flash
- video recording in MP4 format
- Mototunes media player
- FM Stereo Radio with RDS
- Picsel document viewer
- Bluetooth 1.2 with AD2P
- Flight mode
- Linux-based UI with Flash-based interface
- 7 direct shortcuts via numeric buttons

If you look at the phone below long enough, you’ll notice that words etched on its surface are “Pantech Noblesse”. Google the device and you’ll find no trace of it… Why? Because it’s a concept, a fancy luxury one designed by Hyun Sung Lee and seen on Coroflot. Notice the nice use of metals on its surface and I can bet that we’re dealing with silver or maybe stainless steel.

I can’t quite make out the keypad sadly, due to all that glow and I can’t help wondering where the display is. The phone seems to be a slider so placing the keypad on top of the display makes no sense… Till we figure this out, let’s have a look at this nice phone cover below, I bet it’s made out of crocodile skin.

Want a fashion cameraphone that’s also
eco-friendly? Add a wavy design to that and we’ve got an inspirational device, designed by xin FAN and shown on Coroflot. It’s got a Lenovo branding on it and a slightly uncomfortable keypad, that’s also wavy.

All of these design waves are inspired by the Ocean, according to the creator of the handset, while the camera’s coloured lens is embedded in the white housing and looks like a crystal block. The concept phone seems to be using some sort of “raw material” keeping it really environmentally friendly by reducing pollution.
Back to the phone’s lens, it would be produced with the aid of IMD technology that involves the use of the GE special plastic and attached to the device together with the speaker decoration. They’ll be attached to the housing through a heating procedure. In case you’re good at such technical stuff, maybe you got the whole process. I know I didn’t…

Usually,
fashion phones are labelled as good-lookers with poor features, but once in a while an exception pleases the fashionistas out there who really care about their megapixel count and internal memory. The S-series concept is designed by
Simon Enever and it’s available on
Coroflot and in the T3 magazine.

This slider is made from wood, brushed aluminium and steel and features a nice black acrylic wrap. It seems to include both a touchscreen and a normal keypad, plus a frontal camera for 3G calls. Aside from that, its keys are really stylish, but not really comfortable for one’s fingers, while the camera features a pretty big flash guaranteed to light your way through the fancy fashionista universe.

One of the main designers of the
Sprint Fli concept I’ve shown you last week, John Sundermeyer came up with a neat-looking fashion concept phone you can admire below. It features dynamic coloured illumination plus over-sized keypad numbers to set you apart from the rest of the fashionistas in the club.

The concept phone is unofficially branded Voce, but maybe we’ll see it surfacing under some major brand someday. What do you make of it? Will it be a Sony Ericsson Walkman, an LG or maybe a Motorola?

At first glance I thought that the phone from the image below is ugly, but some of you are easily impressed by the fact that a handset can really be made out of steel, gold, hardwood and … crocodile leather. How’s that for a
fashion phone, courtesy of Bellperre?

Also, it seems that these Bellperre phones will be customized according to the customers’ preferences, you know, just like putting some extra ketchup on a burger: “can I get some extra croc skin for my rugged fingers?”. Well, the croc sure isn’t the wildest animal you’ll be touching while writing text messages, as you can choose a varied selection of leathers, from shark, to calf and buffalo.
There’s also a decent choice of casings and you might go for the cool aircraft aluminium or the luxurious 18k rose gold. Adorn those with engravings and special finishes and you’ve got a worthy Vertu rival. The Bellperre phones are hand built in Netherlands and they’ll be available in Europe in June 2008 at an unannounced price.

Feeling trendy? There’s a new concept phone in town, ideal for the fashionista in you and it’s called the Edge phone. Don’t mistake it for the connectivity type as it’s only a name coincidence. The Edge was designed by
Chris Owens and it will surely draw people’s attention towards you, if it ever comes out (and you have one).

The device features a glass keyboard that can be slided in order to answer an incoming call. Edge also features an LED, that illuminates the keypad numbers/characters with the aid of refraction, adding a special glow to them. It’s a cool design we’re dealing with and a nice cellphone that anyone who loved the famous LG Prada Phone would surely adore.
