Nintendo has been struggling a bit to sell the Wii U and recently there was a rumor that they may implement Android smartphone games on this console. Now, straight from T3 comes a brand new concept phone: the Nintendo smartphone.
The device looks a bit like a futuristic Samsung Galaxy S concept, one that’s very thin and has two interesting physical buttons at the bottom, aside from the Home one. The plus and minus button were also present on the Wiimote, which you probably know if you’ve seen it. The Nintendo phone comes as an answer to the new Xbox and the PS4.
Obviously you get a ton of Nintendo games, all of them running natively on the device. The lower area of the device totally reminds me of an iPad Mini and the specs of the Nintendo phone include a 5 inch Full HD AMOLED screen, 2 GB of RAM, Nvidia Tegra 5 graphics and a 2 GHz Snapdragon 8 core CPU. There’s also Wii U Chat on board, basically a Facetime alternative, Wii U connectivity support and a Community app with leaderboards, achievements and Cross Play is here as well.
There’s even a gamepad accessory pictured above… How cool is this gizmo?
Chris Chen has just created a fresh design and sent his Xperia concept to us, accompanied by some futuristic and over the top specs. Meet the Sony Xperia Play 2, that combines the best of Walkman, Cybershot and Bravia technologies into a single device.
The handset features a 5 inch OLED display with Bravia Engine 3 technology, X Reality Pro, Triluminos and 4K resolution. Inside we’ve got a Snapdragon 800 processor at 2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage, plus Vaio technology all the way. MicroSD is also here, as well as a rear 35 mm full frame camera with 24.3 MP CMOS Exmor sensor. The ISO goes to 25.600 and this handset even supports 14 bit RAW image capture, if you can believe it.
There’s also Full HD filming, at either 24p, 60i or 60p and we’ve got Cybershot technology used for the camera. At the front we’ve got an 8 megapixel shooter with Exmor RS sensor. The Xperia Play 2 is PlayStation certified, it has Walkman sound technology and associated app and equalizer, plus a 2500 mAh battery. Finally, the gaming phone runs Android 4.2 and upgrades to Android 5.0. Its design resembles the one of an Xperia Z slapped on top of the control system of the PSP Go, with an interesting extra display area between the action buttons (showing the date/time), from what I can see.
Junior Riega sent us a concept (and insisted posting on Facebook about it way too much) for a new Xperia Play device called the Sony Xperia Ultra. We’re dealing here with something I like to call “Sony meets Nintendo”, since I sense there’s a bit of Nintendo DS here, but also a bit of PS Vita.
The device packs a Super AMOLED HD display with Gorilla Glass protection, 8 GB of DDR 3 RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. There’s also Qualcomm Snapdragon 5.1 GHz processor inside with 64 cores (ARM Krait 1000 Cortex A57) plus an OS that the designer calls Android 6.0 Key Lime Pie. The display has a diagonal of 5.2 inches and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, plus it comes with Sony Mobile Bravia 3 technology and Sony White Magic tech as well.
At the back we’ve got a 21 megapixel camera with 24x ultra Zoom, a xenon flash and LED flash. The cam is able to do 4K video capture at 120 FPS and 3D video as well. Junior Riega imagined that the Xperia Ultra concept would have Sony xLOUD technology, Track ID and some PS Vita controls. We’ve got shoulder buttons, what looks like a Walkman button, a camera button, HDMI port, a nano SIM card slot and the classic gaming buttons on a sliding area.
Sony has just announced the PlayStation 4, but they didn’t also unveil its hardware specs, price, or even a picture of the device, sadly. In order to get a consolation out of this, we show you a brand new concept of a PlayStation phone, or more accurately a PlayStation phablet done by Simon Drake.
The device is called the Sony Xperia PS and it packs a Full HD 6 inch display, 2 GB of RAM and a 1.5 GHz quad core processor, as well as an Adreno 320 GPU. You can map the power button and camera button into the left and right button apparently and there are two illumination bars on board like on the Xperia S. The Sony Xperia PS packs a 13 megapixel camera with rounded LED flash and a 3 MP front camera, plsu a removable back cover and a very pretty design, with tiny bezels.
The CPU inside is a Snapdragon S4 quad core at 1.7 GHz and other specs include 32 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and Bluetooth 4.0. There’s also NFC, a removable 3000 mAh battery and the camera uses Exmor RS sensor, HDR and Full HD video recording. Frankly speaking, I can’t say I’m really excited by the PS4, but I’m quite happy with the idea of a PlayStation phablet. How about you?
Designer Michael Dionne imagined a portable Xbox concept or an Xbox phone if you want to call it that way, with the result being the concept below. It was called the X-Mobile, a pretty fine name if you ask me and it adopts a sliding game control area, plus a very crisp display.
For some reason, the design reminds me of a Motorola device, something like the Milestone, maybe because of the width. I like the way the buttons are integrated and I like the analog sticks especially. I can’t really tell if there are shoulder buttons, but there probably are. As far as specs go, Michael Dionne has another concept for an Xbox device, so I’m just going to imagine that the specs are pretty much the same: a 2.3 GHz dual core AMD CPU, 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, 16/32/64 GB of HDHC flash memory and a custom quad core AMD Vision GPU.
There’s also HDMI out, Bluetooth, front and back 720p cameras, GPS and dual rumble actuators. The specs you’re seeing here is for a tablet-ish device that Michael designed, but more about that in a future article. The next PSP Phone or first Xbox Phone will be wider and thinner than all attempts so far, I guess…
The idea of a Nokia gaming phone isn’t new and the idea of an Xbox Phone has also been approached before. However, combining the two has only happened in recent history, so it’s an idea worth exploring. That’s why we find the Nokia Lumia 0360 Xbox Phone concept pretty interesting, especially with the N-Gage branding also in the mix.
This phone is considered a tribute to both the N-Gage and the Xbox 360 and the result is a pretty bulky gaming smartphone. Nabkawe5 is the creator of the device and in case you’re wondering Nokia 0360, that’s the name of the handset, features an 8 core Snapdragon processor and a GPU With DX11 support, as well as 4 GB of RAM. There’s also 80 GB of storage with SD cards included and 2 x 2000 mAh batteries. Kinect for Windows Phone 8 is here and a PureHD+ Display provides the imagery.
The integrated Kinect camera will allow you to control the Nokia phone with gestures, the ones specific to the famous Xbox sensor/camera system. One of the two 2000 mAh batteries powers the Kinect camera and the heavy consumption areas, like the 5 inch screen, while the other handles normal phone activities. Do you see such a concept happening?
When you think about a gaming phone, either the PSP Phone pops up or the occasional Xbox handset concept. The latter is also the case today, through the Nokia Lumia Play render, done by Antonio Celestino. Describing this as an “Xbox Phone” is not at all far from the truth, since we’re dealing with a smartphone that’s also a pretty powerful console.
Nokia Lumia Play features two game pads at the back of the phone and they can extend out and be used as such, improving the gaming experience. It is also possible to use the device as a gamepad when interacting with an Xbox 360 console. The device features a high definition 1136 x 640 pixel display, a touchscreen with Gorilla Glass protection. There’s also a 5 megapixel front camera capable of 720p videos, while at the back there’s a 10 megapixel camera with Full HD video capture.
This Nokia concept phone runs Windows Phone 8 and measures 7.6 mm in thickness. Lumia Play offers both a directional pad and action buttons, plus there should be some minor shoulder buttons available, although I’m not so sure. The handset has a pretty unusual shape, seen from the front with lots of straight edges and straight lines, so without curves. No specs were mentioned, but a quad core CPU and 2 GB of RAM would be welcome. Is such a phone possible?
Juliano Brustolin from Brazil created an interesting concept gaming phone called Xperia PS Vita. As the name says, the device combines the features of a modern Xperia Phone with the ones of the PS Vita console. The result is a handset that resembles the Xperia Play, but offers a bit more.
First of all, the design of this PSP Phone is very similar to the one of the Xperia Play, although the interface is all PS Vita. We also get 3 Android buttons on the facade of the device and a touchpad at the back, the one from the Vita. In the sliding gaming area there are two analog sticks, action buttons, D pad, Select, Start and a PS button. For some reason, the model’s design reminds me of the Xperia Neo and the shoulder buttons are very discretely integrated, I’ll give you that.
Xperia PS Vita also has a front camera and if I were to come up with specs, I’d say that a quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU is more than enough, as well as 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a 3000 mAh battery. This would be a killer device and with the PlayStation legacy behind it, it would even burry the PS Vita. So, do you fancy an Xperia Play 2 like this?
You probably know that every once in a while we like to cover the occasional PSP 2 concept or PlayStation Phone, but it’s been a while since the last concept like this was published here. Luckily we came across Jung Ou Yang’s work and he created a brilliant Sony PSP 2 render, that you can see below, in full detail. Stunning, simply stunning!
I’ve seen this idea before and loved it every time: two solid parts and a small and thin display between then, perhaps even a flexible display, although I can’t guarantee that. The Sony PSP 2 features Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, a front and rear camera, plus a transparent OLED screen that’s probably 5 inches in diagonal. The device is very easy to hold with two hands and very easy to handle. It feels more like a bigger joystick, than a full fledged console, which is cool.
I should also mention that the concept dates from back in 2009, according to the designer, making it even more interesting. The general layout of the D pad, analog sticks and action buttons is pretty much the same as the one we already know, but everything is just… more futuristic and minimalistic. I like how the designer included the charging port on the right inner side and the audio jack and mini USB port on the left inner side. This is certainly a console I’d buy and the shoulder buttons look classier than ever. Simply great!
Even if the PSP Phone finally came true through the Xperia Play, people still want back the original gaming phone the N-Gage from Nokia. We saw an N-Gage 2 concept here and now the same designer, Davia Quijada (Amaqui) is back with a pretty similar unit, but one based on Android 4.0 and offering Nintendo games.
This Android 4.0 smarpthone seems very thin and has a sliding part with gaming controls. The screen is slightly tilted and it’s wide enough for a great gaming experience. At the back we have a 3D camera and the layout of the gaming keys and everything seems borrowed heavily from the Nintendo DS. One thing’s for sure: this thing looks better than the Xperia Play and if it has better specs, it’s a goldmine. Sadly, Nintendo will never agree to lend a hand to Google to developer such a phone.
However, recent rumors have mentioned that the Nintendo Wii U may end up being an Android tablet, so maybe there’s room for cooperation after all. Anyway, I’d like to know how many of you would prefer a next gen N-Gage over a new PSP Phone/Xperia Play 2?
